Language Exchange

Group created by Beati Pacifici

A group where people can discuss language, practice language with others, and a new learn language , etc. Great for any of us who want to learn a Biblical/Ecclesiastical language (i.e. Latin or Koine Greek), a modern language (English, German, Spanish, Japanese, etc.) or sharpen our current languages.

Attempto, (I assume you're replying to me?)
I've taken two years of Latin and I haven't used it often, but I think I would be able to remember it if I took the time -- I've never tried to speak it fluently, but I suppose it would be well worth learning. I would need to refresh all of the basics of Latin (I believe this will be somewhat challenging for me since I've only ever been able to write and read it well.)
I think I will accept your offer -- might as well since I do want to learn languages. Now, practically, I would need to know (if you want to do this) contact information ( i.e. what website you want to use) and what times (I am assuming that you have a lot less time to spare so I will let you designate times.) Also, I am wondering which language is your first language (If it isn't English -- and I am assuming it isn't -- I would be interested in learning it as well as the Latin)
This arrangement -- if this does happen -- is fine for me (I currently have a lot of time I can maneuver) but I do realize that this may be a little bit more difficult for you, as I would like to be able to learn thoroughly whichever language I am offered. I would like to be able to have continuous conversations and "lessons" -- if I could call them that -- in whichever language so I can become proficient in that language as quickly as I can. I just want to warn you what I would like with our conversations.
Now, I wonder, which Latin pronunciation do you use? I use standard. Do you use the Church pronunciation? I like standard better.

I am interested in learning all of the Romance Languages: Italian, French, Portuguese, German, and Spanish. My priority is fluency first and then grammar details later -- I've heard that this is the best way -- so I need to find someone who speaks the language to Skype/online chat with on a regular basis. I am Catholic and would like to have someone who is too and would be willing to pray the Rosary in alternating languages (I would like to pray in other languages.) Since this would be an online -- perhaps international -- relationship, it would be reassuring to know that whomever is willing is in fact Catholic (I'm not at all used to Skyping and such with new people, so this would be really nice thing to know -- isn't it amazing how really, literally, Catholic the Church is?.) Anyway, also I wouldn't like to have a merely academic and casual relationship with whomever it is; I would be able to tolerate one for the sake of language learning, but I imagine it would be awkward and would really be an impediment in the end for me -- and perhaps them -- to improve in the language.
I only speak English, so I would need someone patient enough to speak the basics of their language to me long enough for me to "return the favor" (that is if they wanted to improve their English and didn't know it well enough.) I'm interested in learning Italian and French first -- if possible -- but I would be willing to learn whichever Romance Language was offered to me first.
I realize this is a small group, so I don't suppose it will be very likely someone here will want to help me with this, but since this is off of Catholic Answers, I thought it would be a good place to find some Catholic Polyglots.
If you know that you can't help me, I'd at least appreciate it if you could let me know of, possibly, some online Catholic resources, a site or something, which is for this sort of "Catholic to Catholic" online language exchange -- if there is anything like that out there. There are *secular* resources like that out there, but I'd rather see if there are any Catholics out there first, so as to have a reassurance that this stranger I'm meeting online is Catholic (I guess from your perspective I'm a stranger online, but doesn't it give you some reassurance that I'm a Catholic stranger?)
Anyway, this post is getting a little long. I would appreciate any advice toward online total immersion and am wondering if any Catholic Polyglots out there would be willing to help out to make one more Catholic Polyglot. Thanks

My uni is offering 1st year latin this summer and I'm thinking of maybe taking it. However because it's classical latin I think I might not, as I'm only interested in ecclesiastical latin. However having a teacher would help for the difficulties of a language which is so different than the english or even french/portuguese that i know.

    We'll see...

Olá fabiohs, eu sou um canadense que está aprendendo o português. Vejo que faz muito tempo que você não assisto o Catholic Answers, mas se você ler isto, posso ajudá-lo apprender o inglês. Mande-me um messagem!

If not, I just came here to share how I've found a Brazilian priest who does and has been doing regular videos about the catholic faith for a few years (kind of like Father Robert Barron, but Barron's videos are less catechetical). He has many videos - he even just put one out today on the resignation of the Holy Father Benedict XVI. He is named Padre Paulo Ricardo. He speaks rather slowly and pronounces what he says very well, even though I have trouble still with the Brazilian accent, and I am learning a lot thanks to his videos about the catholic faith. So I'm killing two birds with one stone!

    http://www.francaisfacile.com/index.php

Si tu t'abonnes à leur email hébdomadaire, tu recevras des testes très utiles pour les choses gramaticales en français comme les verbes en terminaisons bizarres comme tu as mentionné.

    Bon apprentissage!

John of Patmos, the only advice I have is to learn the pronunciation of the word and then match it to correct accent mark.
