After a rather lively debate on the group wall, I figured I would get us started here (which may be a better platform for any further discussions)

I am a father of 4 with our 5th blessing joining us in November. I am a recent convert to Catholicism, but have been studying it for some time. I am currently working on an MA in Theology and serve on active duty in the Coast Guard.

Post baby, it looks like we will be going with the Sympto-Thermal Method which is advocated by the Couple to Couples League (CCL)

    "St. Michael the Archangel,
    defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
    and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
    by the power of God,
    thrust into hell Satan,
    and all the evil spirits,
    who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen

Did you guys know that you can read Humanae Vitae online for free on the Vatican's website?
    ENCYCLICAL LETTER
    HUMANAE VITAE
    OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF
    PAUL VI
    TO HIS VENERABLE BROTHERS
    THE PATRIARCHS, ARCHBISHOPS, BISHOPS
    AND OTHER LOCAL ORDINARIES
IN PEACE AND COMMUNION WITH THE APOSTOLIC SEE,
TO THE CLERGY AND FAITHFUL OF THE WHOLE CATHOLIC WORLD, AND TO ALL MEN OF GOOD WILL,
    ON THE REGULATION OF BIRTH

Also I do recommend the scripture catholic website too if you want to look at bible quotes against contraception and they have quotes from early church fathers that show we were always against contraception. They do do a good job of it. Please trust the church. They don't call things sins just for the fun of it especially things that seem like there will be a fight to get some people to follow it. We woundn't give ourselves all this trouble just for the hell of it.

    Hello all,

I have been away from this forum for a while and have not read all of the posts, but I do want to comment on what I said earlier. My bad for saying that Jesus preached against condoms. What I really was meaning to say is that contraception is mentioned in the Bible. For some reason I thought the sin of Onan was mentioned in the New Test. and assumed that it was Jesus preaching against it, however it is mentioned in Genesis. Here is a great piece of work that describes it way better than I ever could...

    http://nfpandmore.org/2007%20May%20%...0OF%20ONAN.pdf

Here is another great website that lists scripture verses that point toward contraception being wrong...

    http://www.scripturecatholic.com/contraception.html

Also, it doesn't really matter if it's in the Bible or not. It is wrong to mess with sex... period. The marital act is a beautiful thing, and tainting it would not be right. Reading some theology of the body would help you to recognize that.
You know there are a lot of things that are not in the Bible that we know are wrong - atomic warfare, drinking and driving, child pornography, etc. etc.

By the way, Catholics are not the only religion to believe this. The Catholic Church is not some big ol' mean monster trying to control or destroy anything or anyone. It is actually quite the opposite.

Stuu it seems like no matter what anyone says, you are going to fight back, so it's kind of a fruitless discussion. You obviously have some issues against the Church and that is between you and God. No one will be able to change your mind unless you open it. So I am going to end my replies here and say some prayers that you will open your heart to the truth.
    Good luck and God bless!

First when we are using terms like "cult" w get further away from trying to understand and makes a very close minded appearance. With that said, debate and education arn't very practical. So my last post in this string...

I have already addressed the claims about condoms. I am not aware of any scripture reference. Then again, there are a lot of things that didn't exsist in that time. Stands to reason it wouldn't be mentioned.

Contraception allows for love in a physical sense and removes an aspect of responsibility and communication. Te procreation aspect is withheld - which is obviously not total giving.

Contraception die in fact diminish the relationship with God for the very reasons I have already discussed.

NFP has been proven time abstinence again to be just as effective as any artificial contraception while also strengthening a marriage.

When faith is equated to gullibility you really have to questions ones understanding and motivation... With that said, I will respectfully remove myself from this debate with the understanding that you're opinions are just that - and God gave you free will to make these assumptions even if they are against His will.

    God bless...

    Hi mtbender

Perhaps you could establish that I am wrong if you could actually make a clear link between scripture and Catholic claims against contraception.

Hannah claimed that Jesus preached against condom use, but has not justified that either. The references you gave are not reasonably interpreted in those terms, and it is only the cult of Catholicism amongst christian cults that has made this "interpretation".

So therefore I maintain that there is no scripture that unambiguously condemns contraception.

Do you disagree that contraception is an act of giving, and if so, how do you justify that? As you have not established that contraception "drives us away from god" then that must be your opinion. Or the pope's.

Is this the gullibility of dedication to the concept of infallibility?

This pope looks to be particularly fallible in most areas outside doctrine. Why give him any credit within doctrine?

Regarding your reply to Karenfern, all religions should say that condoms are a more effective form of contraception than thermometer contraception, because that is what the data says.

    Karenfern,
I find a couple issues with your statement...

First, the best way to prevent unplanned pregnancy and abortion is abstinence and education. NFP - depending on the study you use is 99-100% effective and also allows for a couple to have a child when they are ready. More so than some o the artificial means that create a chemical imbalance even after removal which prevents immediate conception.

Second, I do not know of any religion that would say condoms are a better form of planning a family than NFP. Correct me of I am wrong...

    Stuart,
We certainly have established no such thing, and I would be interested to see where that is supported through Catholic doctrin. But i will concede that there is no place in the bible that I am aware of where Jesus talks about condoms. I am going to hazard to say it is because they were not around at the time.

I am not sure how the unity of marriage and the creation of life are merely "joke arguments" but I recognize that is your opinion.

Everything that can be achieved with artificial contraception can also be achieved through NFP. But NFP brings so much more to a relationship.

When personal success drives us away from God we have certainly entered a sad state.

Please forgive any typo's... I am on the road now and working from my phone.

    Hi,

I wanted to write this message explaning what I am doing before actually doing it, namely leaving the group. I have enjoyed this group as a member and thank you HannahBroussard for creating it. However with this said, I have over extended myself in several groups and don't really particpate that much in this group. I don't feel right in being in a group that I don't partipate in, and it is for this reason and this reason alone that I am leaving the group.

You guys will be in my prayers.

    God bless.

Has anyone used Lady Comp? I have been using NFP since I got married almost 6 years ago, and I now have 4 children (all unplanned). Due to some health problems my doctor feels I can only have one more child tops. I would love to be able to check my NFP charting with something as to be very cautious.
    Thanks
