Like many Maltese, I can trace my roots to Southern Italy, especially Sicily. The influence of Italian culture in my country is also very strong. The Maltese language itself is greatly influenced by Italian. I once heard a man jokingly state that the Maltese language sounds like an
    "Italian speaking Arabic."

Cindy, if you look on the Vatican website, you can find the Pope's mass schedule. He holds audiences on Wednesdays. I missed that because of our schedule. However I was able to attend a mass the Pope said for the Synod of Bishops. I had to ask for a n invitation on line and picked it up at the Vatican. Actually, I. Accidentally was about. To go somewhere I didn't belong so the cute little guard went and got it for me. You can also buy rosaries and leave them for the Pope to bless then pick them up that afternoon. You may have to search awhile on the V. Website. Just click on everything til you find the schedule.

I'm part Italian on my father's side. One of the family names is Dodaro and they were from Calabrese, the toe of the boot. I don't know anything else about them, though.

Next year want to live in Rome for at least 3 months. Retired with
only a Social Security Check, anyone know someone who would rent out a room reasonably?
Can get along with most anybody, so long as they believe in practicing the Golden Rule of treating each other with equal respect and consideration.
Thanks for any ideas you might have.

I know, a bit early....anyway, anyone observing any Italian Christmas traditions? My mom's cooking a ton of Italian food (only no fish, since my dad and I would be the only ones eating) and I brought home pannetone

My grandparents were that way, except in reverse! =] It's a wonderful combo...apart from when they both got angry....things flew! =P

I'm half Italian on my mother's side. I'm not sure where they were from. One of the tombstones in Memphis says St. Julio, but I can't even find that on a map. The names are Sambucetti and Laurenzi. Anyone with one of those names or know anyone who is?

Ciao. Can anyone tell me the root of the name Di Rubbo? "Di" is "of"; but, the closest italian words that I can equate with Rubbo are rubero, meaning thief, or Rubio (actually spanish) meaning "fair" or "light".

Hi ffelts...that is great. I am fasting three days per week, and so far so good. It is amazing how we take food for grranted, how much needless snacking I have done...and now, with that out of my life, I'm more aware of it, and really don't want to go back to that type of mindless snacking. God bless you in your efforts this Lent.
