Catholics vs. Media, Politics and Culture

Group created by elijio

Trying to live the Catholic life in today's world can be tough but how much do the things we learn from the media influence our behavior and opinions? Let's discuss!

Hello, I hope I can be in this group? I voted for Obama in 2008 and am on a deadline to send in my ballot and cast my vote for him again. My Parish Priest suggested that I simply avoid voting altogether, because Obama is Pro-choice. I think Obama's policies are great for the poor and struggling, but I'm afraid I will be committing a mortal sin by casting my vote or him this time. My priest didn't go so far as to call it a mortal sin per se, but did suggest I not vote for Obama. Any thoughts?

With all the media assumptions about wrong-doings at the Vatican, how much media coverage have we had about Notre Dame suing the Obama administration? Your thoughts.

does anyone feel that when Catholics make a big stand against abortion that the media begins an all out attack on the Church about the priest sex abuse scandals? If you feel they do, who do you think is behind it and why?

Would like to discuss this poem I wrote many years ago
and find the Church is still stuck in discrimination against the
female half of God's Image. There can be no peace within or without as long as we remain in inequality.

    CHRISTOLOGY

If Jesus came back as a woman
where would she go to preach?
Certainly not to the Mother Church
For that is claimed by males
    for males only!
    Perhaps to a convent
    inside closed doors be heard
the same closed doors of the Temple
    2000 years ago
    Men stood then inside
while women waited in the outer courts
No wonder our world is still in Chaos
when only half of the wholeness
comtrol the other half of God's Image
The female half of God's Image
from the first and Priestly version
of three Creation stories in Genesis
1:27, the third begins in chapter 5:1
Seek ye first the God of Holy Love
who is "not a god of partiality".

Vatocan II told us through The Holy Spirit
    to end discrimination
within The Church as "not the Will of God"
Pastorial Constitution, Article 29 Vatican II
    1965.

Hello! I'm just joining the group... wanted to extend Happy New Year greetings from a Southern girl living in Northern California! I'm from the very conservative, fundamental and traditionalist Bible Belt and now living in Barbara Boxer, Diane Feinstein and Nancy Pelosi territory! God save us!

Re youth (3) We need to ask them what they need - what type of community are they looking for - what will enhance their lives AND we need to invest in them. We have to get beyond the idea that youth minsters are all volunteers - it is WAY to important not to be a full time job for one or more people in a parish to ensure that the youth are engaged.

Re youth - (2) we need to give the Catechesis - where they are. Find ways to reach out to them using new media - with eternal truths.

elijio - per your question about the youth --- they are so exposed and influenced by media --- I remember when what was 'new' music in the 1970's in Churches really spoke to me as a young person - so (1) I think we need an entire new liturgical music that will be a better way for them to express their relationship to God - to us - as it was to our parents when that 'new' music was introduced - it will sound strange in Church - but they aren't us - so that would be my first suggestion.
