Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

Hello, friends. We haven't had any stories lately about being Catholic in the Protestant South. Anyone want to share one?
I thought I was going to have one. The last couple of times my family has eaten out, we've gotten pauses. A couple was passing our table as we crossed ourselves for the blessing one time, and they nearly stumbled over each other. I didn't see it, (for obvious reasons), but I heard it. Apparently the one in front paused, and the one in back didn't. It was tempting to look up, but I was busy.
When we crossed ourselves today, the conversation at the next table came to a sudden halt. I hope they hushed simply because they saw we were praying and didn't want to intrude, and there's no reason to think otherwise. If that's the case, then it's a different kind of story than the ones we usually have. It seems to me that they didn't care what religion we were; prayer is prayer. Refreshing, isn't it?

Hey, y'all! Is anyone here from the El Paso area? I know someone wants to start a Rosary there, but they're having a problem. See, there's already a daily Rosary said at their parish, but it's more appropriate for those who are pressed for time and still want to pray a daily Rosary. My friend wants to start a more "contemplative" Rosary for those who want to pause and meditate on the mysteries. In a town like El Paso, I think it would be possible (and can see a need) to have both. So if anyone is in that area, let us know what you think. I'm not around there, so it would really help to have some input from someone in the El Paso area.

Is anyone closely following the news about what the Pentagon is proposing in relation to an American's right to freely exercise their religion, specifically in the military? Are you aware that one of the advisers pushing for this infringement is a raving anti-Christian extremist? His name is Mikey Weinstein, and he refers to "fundamentalist Christian monsters" (for daring to be nearly as zealous in our beliefs as he is in his), and calls Christians "pitiable unconstitutional carpetbaggers," while pushing to restrict or eradicate or Constitutional rights. I don't frequently post links to outside sites, but I believe this is of significant consequence to justify it. Please go to aclj.org (/free-speech-2) and read about it, (and sign the petition if you feel inclined after reading the story). Every story has at least two sides, but I cannot fathom that the rest of this story could in any way excuse a gross violation of our first Amendment rights. We aren't attempting to establish a state religion, but to exercise ours freely. Attempting to circumvent "Congress shall make no law," by going through the Pentagon is an unacceptable pretext.

    "Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting he free exercise thereof"

A while back I was reflecting on my younger days when I didn't have a care in the world and never even thought about repenting . So the other day, I sat down and tried to remember every year of my life and began to repent for my sins. Now I HAVE been to confession since then, but one morning it just hit me that I needed to repent again. So I did. Then I thought, well I know I've confessed, but maybe I just need to confess again...So I did.

Doing a little housekeeping with the soul works wonders. Then you realize that if you repent for all things that are not of God's Will, then you stop and think before you sin again. Nothing like repeating the same sins to the priest. You get kind of tired of confessing the same thing over and over again. So you no longer sin or you pray that you no longer sin.

Now if my daughter(14) will stop and think before she sins (the same 5 sins every week) Father and I will be so greatful.

Parce, our parish priest is from India, all of his sisters are nuns, in fact he is there now with a dear friend of mine. Can't wait for his return.

    Welcome Uday Sheel.

I'm making an exception, allowing a non-Southerner Protestant into the group, in hopes that Uday Sheel will find some support and guidance in his search for reconciliation. I would think being a Christian in India is kinda like being a Catholic in the South.
