Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

Hi, I'm in eastern KY. We moved here several years ago from a parish of 8000 in PA to a parish of 100 here in KY. Talk about culture shock!

10-4 good Paganus on the Texas Pete (made in Winston Salem, N.C. btw). It is also a good condiment for fried chicken.

Speaking of loving things fried, has anyone every heard that recording of Elvis singing a tribute to Mary? I've only heard it once, and I can't remember if it was Rosary based, or some other wording.
    Anyone?
    blessings, Wes

luvu2, I met my lovely bride in Jackson KY. Your statements are so true we have the same problem here in Southern WV. My wife is a cradle Catholic and I converted in 1983. Welcome to Catholic Answers, come back often and read the post and explore the site. You can learn so much.

I am a New Orleans boy where Catholicism is alive and well (albeit weakened by Katrina) with 108 parishes with 2 of those being dominican parishes. the Carmalites, Jesuits, Brothers of the Sacred Heart, Josephites, Marianites of Holy Cross, and other religious communites i cannot remember all being active in the community. i am lucky i guess

Hi everyone. My name is George, and I was born and raised in the Carolinas. I becamse Catholic in 2001. I haven't as yet had much confrontation because of being Catholic, but then because of my disability I dont get out much. So we'll see. This looked like an interesting group so I thought I'd join. Nice to meet y'all.

Cast iron and bacon grease - the secret to perfect green beans! I'll have to give the Pan Fried Grit Pie a try.

Lately I just add Texas Pete to my grits and I'm a happy man. Also tastes good on liver pudding, eggs and pretty much everything else.
