Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

Celephais72, when we would go on our yearly trip to the local pioneer museum in elementary school, they'd serve us grits. Most would eat their grits with butter, but some would eat it with syrup. Have you ever heard of such a thing?

Sorry to jump in, but, bosonhiggs, I eat my grits every morning with a smile! Grits are hominy that's been dried and ground into medium sized coarse grains. Cook them with a little hot water and serve 'em up with a big pat of butter. Mmm mmm!

Thanks WP I certainly got a bit of culture shock when I moved in. My hometown is predominantly Catholic, and the second largest group is the Quakers!

Paganus - What exactly are grits? (oh dear, showing my ignorance, aren't I? My grandfather always sent us 50lbs of pecans from his farm - hope that makes up for my lack of grits!)

I belong to a men's prayer group of about 20 men. Only 2 of us are Catholic and the rest are fundamentalist. A few weeks ago one of the pastors of a Church of God was telling of how the Jews are turning to Old traditional ways. I made the remark that it would be a wonderful statement. if we could as a Christan Nation to do a day of the Eucharist. I just got stares, I love my fellowship with this group and have seen many answered prayers. But doing this "Catholic Thing" would be a little much for them.

Children here call adults "Miss (first name"), Mr (first name), and the MR and Mrs (last name)

    We are raised very politely!

Paganus - thanks for the chuckle w/ your post to Sue Reedy - womnder what a US southern drawl might sound like w/ NZ accent...

Sue Reedy, Now that all depends... When you say "yeah", how many syllables does it have? Do your kids say "yes, sir" and "yes, ma'am"? What would you make of a black flag with a number 3 on it flying at half-mast? Ever bring a mess of vittles to your neighbor when she's feelin' poorly? Do you believe that some folks just need shootin'? Have you ever got three points on a leaner? Do you grow your own tomatoes - or are you fixin' to? Would you respect a boy who didn't fight to defend his momma's good name? Do you take pride in your grits? Do you feel sorry for those poor souls who were not blessed to be born in your hometown?

bosonhiggs:Hello everyone! Thought I'd introduce myself. I go to university in Missouri, not necessarily the "south", and my roommate...

Well, the "boot hill" is easily in, and I think the rest of the state could be admitted --- the main obstacle, IMV, would be collectively renouncing the Midwestern identity, and claiming some Southern customs and cuisine.
Your faith matter (with the roommate) sounds right on target for so many in this group; I suggest you stay with us.
    blessings WP
