Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

Kathleen riney you are a pill! Thank you for such a great post. We are armored in our faith and you seem to do your part in evangelizing in a powerful way. God Bless you and keep you safe in Jesus' arms as His warrior for the truth about our church !

Alli4Truth, if you do make it to the Basilica in DC just a short walk or drive is Pope John Paul Culture Center.

Alli4Truth, I highly recommend making a pilgrimage to the Basilica in DC - largest church in the hemisphere.

Oops! I forgot to say, I do purchase a book if one of the stores has one. Hasn't cost me much money though.

AMEN!!!! MY oldest daughter & her RC baptised husband both belong to "Bible Churches" She's not quite sure if I'm saved because she thinks I'm nuts! She's sure my husband (Cradle RC) is lost because he "loves me too much"!!! Other than that....When we first moved to Texas, I was at an AA meeting & afterwards, some man came up to me (I had a crucifix around my neck) & said"young lady did you know that your pope is the Anti Christ???? I responded: No sir he's not & I can prove it to you", 'how' he asked. I replied, with a sneer, "because I am!!!! Never saw him again!!! That was way back in 1977. I try not to be ugly about it anymore. I go to generic Christian bookstores on purpose & ask for Catholic titles. I also check to see if they carry any "chick" publications. If they do, I take one to the manager & "protest " Darkness will only prevail if no light is shined on it.

If anyone ask me if I am born again, I say, "Yes, I was born again in the Catholic church after I left the protestant church!"
If we cannot stand firm for our church then we are hypocrites.

I would like to mention that many of these wrong ideas about the Catholic church, I believe, come from the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran church.
If you google their website, they have posted that they believe that the Pope is the Anti-Christ. Yes, look it up.
I wrote to them and took them to the mat but they never wrote back.
These lies have filtered over as gossip to any and all protestant churches. People buy this stuff because they have never been to a Catholic Church nor done any research on the matter, they just believe whatever anyone of their own faith tells them.
It is up to us to set them straight.
I have no problem answering these attacks, in fact I welcome them. This gives me the opportunity to serve God and our church. The nicest people have been the Mormons who look depressed when I tell them I am Catholic but they still offer to mow my lawn!
No Jehovah Witness come to our door anymore because we fly the American Flag and the POW/MIA flag.
Next time anyone says anything negative about the Catholic church ask them if they have ever been to the Catholic church. It will shut them up and then you can invite them to our church to see for themselves. God Bless !

Hi y'all ! I am a recent convert to Christianity (2007) and after a year at the Episcopal, now Anglican Church I converted to the RCC.
I was miserable in church until I became a Catholic.
I told my Baptist neighbor that I was converting and she went into the usual, "Oh, you worship Mary" spiel and I have never gone back inside her house although I explained the error of her ways. She does not even go to church, but her husband goes a lot.
Our other neighbors actually gave me a ride one Sunday to the Catholic Church and never mentioned anything negative. They are not Baptist but Church of Christ and are really nice.
I wear saint medals and an Easten Orthodox crucifix that was a gift. I evangelize whenever possible at the doctor, at Walmart and even have tried to poach my former friends at the Anglican church.
Being Catholic is my childhood dream. I was a Buddhist, however for 30 years. During that time, I would still go to the missions in California and the Catholic churches in my neighborhood. I now live in Central Texas in a small town and I love our church it is packed! On the other hand, the Anglican church is lucky to have 100 people total.
I am on the RCIA committee and each year we have at least 7 to 10 converts.
I willl post again and give more info.

I live in Spartanburg, SC and haven't even seen my first Chick publication (makes Sign of the Cross) I haven't come across the first anti-Catholic remark in the 3 and a half years I have lived here, so I am very sorry you have to deal with that in Pickens. (Haven't made it there yet.)
