Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

What did Bishop Sheen say? (I'm sure someone has the precise quote.) Something like ... '...only a fraction of those that think they hate the Catholic Church actually do, what they hate is what they think the Catholic Church is.'
(That was surely the case at least when he said it, now, I wonder.)
Anyway my advice to vplee, easier said than done, but in the public forum you mention; first pray, then clarify & explain as best you can, then just leave the results with God.
    Thank you for your witness.
    blessings, Wes

    Hello everyone!
I am a Catholic living in the bible belt. I have been under attack in our local newspaper "online forum", for defending our faith. I stumbled upon this website, and am encouraged that I might find some help here. I am not Southern by birth, and have never really had to be an apologist. This has been emotionally exhausting, and I hope to find some help and answers here! God Bless.

Unfortunately, the sorry public education system has stripped many Southrons of knowledge of their history, including the deep ties between the Catholic Church and the Confederacy...

    RICHMOND, September 23, 1863.
    VERY VENERABLE SOVEREIGN PONTIFF
The letters which you have written to the clergy of New Orleans and New York have been communicated to me, and I have read with emotion the deep grief therein expressed for the ruin and devastation caused by the war which is now being waged by the United States against the States and people which have selected me as their President, and your orders to your clergy to exhort the people to peace and charity. I am deeply sensible of the Christian charity which has impelled you to this reiterated appeal to the clergy. It is for this reason that I feel it my duty to express personally, and in the name of the Confederate States, our gratitude for such sentiments of Christian good feeling and love, and to assure Your Holiness that the people, threatened even on their own hearths with the most cruel oppression and terrible carnage, is desirous now, as it has always been, to see the end of this impious war; that we have ever addressed prayers to Heaven for that issue which Your Holiness now desires; that we desire none of our enemy's possessions, but that we fight merely to resist the devastation of our country and the shedding of our best blood, and to force them to let us live in peace under the protection of our own institutions, and under our laws, which not only insure to every one the enjoyment of his temporal rights, but also the free exercise of his religion. I pray Your Holiness to accept, on the part of myself and the people of the Confederate States, our sincere thanks for your efforts in favor of peace. May the Lord preserve the days of Your Holiness, and keep you under His divine protection.

I moved to the south 12 years ago as a military move. The only Catholic options for Mass that I had then was on the base. Since that time, three more Catholic Churches have opened due to the rise of Catholics moving into this area. Finding a Catholic Church around a military installation seems to be easier than finding one the further away you get.
I will be moving again at the end of May due to retirement to a small town in Alabama. I did find one Catholic Church...but it kind of left me a little put off because they only offer one Mass in English...the other three are in Spanish. I guess I could try to learn the language as far as the Mass is concerned.

Hi makamoimoi & JenyTori and welcome!
I confess: As a young adult who, though raised in a churched home (Methodist), really saw the Bible come to life through some spirited fundamentalist preaching (some quite useful really) --- I then was part of groups, bible studies and the like, where the question 'Are Roman Catholics saved?' sometimes arose.
My typical answer was "Possibly, but it depends on the individual Catholic reaching outside the shroud of her/his religion, etc. etc. etc."
Today, as a late-middle-aged man, I'm not boasting over my youthful charity; rather as someone who hopes to swim the Tiber sooner rather than later, confessing my ignorance.

Hi, I am a Devout Catholic Revert from Louisiana.
(I moved to Washington state about 4 years ago). I remember having a rousing conversation with a man about our love for Our Lord. The man asked where I went to church. I told him St Francis Xavier Cathedral proudly. He was puzzled and asked what was that? I told him Catholic! He looked disturbed and patted my hand and said "that's OK". Conversation over. Otherwise it's lots of why do you worship statues and Mary and stuff like that and rarely does anyone care to listen to your answer. That's the part I don't get. Why ask if you don't want to know?

I love that this group exists. When I moved down here several years ago, I slowly realized that Catholics are often not considered Christians in the south. It was kind of a shock to meet genuine ignorance....but not malice. Just a lot of people that were brought up thinking that the Catholic Church is the Whore of Babylon...literally. I have gotten tired of explaining that we do not pray to statues or think Our Lady can answer our prayers...tired of trying to explain that 'honor' is not 'worship'...it can be exhausting. Anyhow...good to find all of you.

    NASCAR Anyone?

I can think of two Sprint Cup champions (formerly Winston Cup) who were practicing Catholics. (Please let me know if you are aware of more.)

The GWTW (1939) quote offered earlier by Paganus got me to thinking about the O'Hara's plight as Catholics cut off from a reachable parish. I wonder what they did? Clearly Ellen led them in family prayers in the evening- that is in the novel as well as on film, but when did they get to mass or confession? An occasional trip to Atlanta is my best guess.
Am I wrong in my general assumption; did they have a Catholic church in Clay County GA? Obviously after the war there is no priest available because the novel has Ashley officiating at Gerald's funeral using the English Book of Common Prayer (Mitchell comments on that anomaly in her text).

    blessings, Wes P.

    Hi guys,
This is my first post (other than a bio that I may have put together months ago), but it is certainly my first post in "Catholics in the South" -- I qualify geographically, but I'm not Catholic just yet. I do love and respect the Church, however, and I attend mass regularly.
As to my southern bona fides, I was born and raised in eastern N.C. where Catholics are quite rare, and I've lived now in central Kentucky for the past 10 years (20% of yrs.). Here I've met some real life Catholics that are very committed to the Faith. May their tribe increase!
Look forward to scanning the messages and looking for posts on NASCAR, pork barbecue, sweet tea, and Jesus.
Holy Mary pray for us all,
    signed
