Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

JRPO: Aaaaahhhh, THANKS! It's a balmy 14 degrees this morning and that makes me feel much better. The house I bought doesn't have a fireplace, so I got one of those fake electric ones so I could still get the "fireplace" experience It's the best $250 I've ever spent.

P.S. That pic is now my computer background at work. AWESOME

    There you go Sarah

Nothing like a nice warm fire to keep you warm
Just imagine the flicking of the flames, the crackling of the wood burning.
Not a good idea for me. Now I'm hot. I'm going for a swim

Hello Everyone and a belated Happy Epiphany. The description of many sects and one parish describes my situation perfectly. I have an additional problem in that my one parish is served by a priest who sees no difficulty in giving the Eucharist to people who are known by him to be non-Catholics. I was taught (in my youth in the fifties) that this is very incorrect. His thoughts when questioned were that everyone should have the blessings of receiving the Holy Eucharist even if they have not been Baptised or Confirmed or received the Sacrament of Confession. ("...and please don't tell the bishop or I will be in trouble...") This makes it difficult for my to attend Mass served by him since I feel that he is in Heresy. Any thoughts?

Nypeach, I have no idea what a Catholic is supposed to look like to a Protestant, but I have seen people in a crowd that I knew were Catholic, (before looking for "signs").

Oh, and happy Epiphany. Thanks, Paganus.
BTW, the Faulkner museum in New Albany, MS now occupies what was originally the Catholic church. There was a BEAUTIFUL huge old magnolia tree there that they cut down. Pity.

Funny how things affect people differently. It works for me. Thinking of all that warm sand... It's about 35 F here, but will drop into 20's by morning.

No because now I'm just jealous I'm one of those people that unless the temp in my house is at 77+ I'm cold. I still drink hot tea during the summer. Thankfully Oklahoma gets some pretty warm days in the summer so for part of the year I'm comfortable. I may just hibernate the rest of this week......
