Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

Parce: Here's the 12 days of Christmas meaning I received in an email, so I hope they are all right!

From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were
not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone
during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics.
It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning, plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality
    which the children could remember.

-The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
-Two turtle doves were the Old and New Testaments.
-Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
-The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke & John.
-The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
-The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
-Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit--Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
-The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
-Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit--Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness,
    Gentleness, and Self Control.
-The ten lords a-leaping were the ten commandments.
-The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
-The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in the Apostles' Creed.

So true, JRPO, and I like doing that, but down here, deep in Protestant country, they look at you awfully funny. I do it anyway, then add that it's the "xth" day of Christmas. They still think I'm crazy, but that's okay with me. I love Christmas, all 12 days of it!

This year, I got exactly the Christmas present I needed--spiritually. I got nothing. Not one gift, not a thing. It was great, because I wasn't distracted by "stuff," and got to focus entirely on the TRUE gift of Christmas. All I got for Christmas was JESUS! I think my family will begin a tradition of trading gifts on St. Nichola's feast day (Dec 6th) so we can focus more on Advent and preparing for the true meaning of Christmas. And I'll probably get gifts when I go to see my family, but on Christmas Day, Jesus had me nearly all to Himself.

Today is the sixth day of Christmas. So, I hope you are all having a blessed Christmas! BTW, does anyone know the meaning of the gifts in "The Twelve Days of Christmas?" I remember some of them... new post time.

It was suggested by the priest that done Mass this week ,to keep wishing people a blessed Christmas because its still Christmas until the Epiphany.

    A CATHOLIC NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

‘Twas the night before Christmas, so we bathed in warm suds,
fixed up our hair, and donned our nice duds.
We drove straight to church ‘neath the bright Christmas stars,
and then gazed in wide wonder at so many strange cars.
We shook hands, or gave kisses to each new face we passed,
for we were going in, to our Vigil Christ’s Mass.
Once inside the church, all our talking we ceased,
for we came face-to-face with the Prince of all Peace!
The Vigil began; we raised high all our voices,
and sang with elation, making our joyful noises.
And when Mass was over and we were dismissed,
we each felt the glow from what we had witnessed.
We carried it home, singing hymns sweet and carols,
with thoughts of the shepherds and the angel heralds.
“Hark!” they demanded, then softened to say,
that the King of all peoples was coming that day.
Wondrous the message, amazing to hear!
Now began the new era at midnight that year!
No prince of a proud king, but lying in hay,
is where shepherds found him ‘fore the breaking of day.
Thus tenderly swaddled and born in a manger,
was the King of all glory, both savior and stranger.
Instead of a conqueror, a slayer of nations,
His enemy is sin, His Blood is salvation.
And now, we who love Him, who follow and cherish,
take hope in His message that we shall never perish!

    So remembering His message of life, hope, and light;
I wish you peace, joy, and love, and to all a holy night.

JRPO, glad to hear your team won. Sounds like it was a good game. Mine lost (New Orleans Saints--gridiron football) for the first time this season. But after being a fan for so many years, I can't complain--it's been an awesome year! (And within hours of my post, the cold weather arrived, but with no ice for the roads, thanks be to God.) Ah, but maybe we should get back on topic.

Paganus, thanks for posting that. What a lovely hymn. I think I might look for my old Poe collection and see what I find in there.
And yes, we are and will be persecuted (even if only lightly) for believing. But it's worth it in the end!

paxvobiscum, glad you found a Catholic friend at work. It's sad that people hold so strongly to their notions of who or what we are rather than just asking. The lady could just as easily have asked IF you really worship Mary as to mutter a "hit-and-run" accusation at you.

sambfive, so right about them missing much of the rich Faith they have available to them, including the favors we gain from honoring our dear Mother whom God honored first.

Thank you yes my team did win. Australia beat the West Indies(boys from the Caribbean) in a three match series the second match drawn and the third was a narrow win. The Windies as they are affectionately known, put up a good fight.

Here's what one Protestant Southerner has to say about the Blessed Virgin Mary:

    At morn–at noon–at twilight dim-
Maria! thou hast heard my hymn!
In joy and woe–in good and ill-
Mother of God, be with me still!
When the hours flew brightly by,
And not a cloud obscured the sky,
My soul, lest it should truant be,
    Thy grace did guide to thine and thee;
Now, when storms of Fate o'ercast
Darkly my Present and my Past,
    Let my Future radiant shine
With sweet hopes of thee and thine!

    -Edgar Allan Poe, Hymn, 1835

Paxvobiscum, If we were of the world, the world would love us, but we are not, and it does not! Anti-Catholicism is not a Southern phenomenon, although it might appear so to folks who have left the comfort of Catholic neighborhoods behind them for less familiar pastures.
