Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

Prayers are being said for many in need of the following:
employment, advice, guidance, peace of heart and mind, quieting of the soul, acceptance, homeless, the sick, family trials, and all that are suffering in this world.

May you have a Blessed day.

My family and I have been through many trials for the past few years. My children are being abused in many ways by their mother and her boyfriend. Yet when my children speak out or I try to to help by way of court and law, we are continually silenced because we are not the majority religion. My ex-wife has painted my wife and me as voodoo devil worshipers due to our faith as Catholics in a Baptist dominated area. My oldest daughter as of late has been showing increasing signs of mental illness and her mother feeds her delusions. I am at the point that I do not know what to do anymore. I have been told repeatedly by many people to give up; but they are my children it is my purpose to protect and guide them through life. I love my children and want to know if anyone knows how I can help them.

Catholic sighting update! When last I posted here, I mentioned meeting a fellow Catholic who admitted to attending an other church, out of friendship and convenience. Of course, I cautioned against it. Well, the other day she stopped by my desk, asking if I had my Rosary. "Every day" I replied, as I held it up. She asked if she might borrow it later in the day. Fortunately, I keep a spare in my car. I took this as a sign that the Catholic Church is still truly her home. Vivat Jesu!

What a beautiful day to be alive. I was truly blessed this summer with the opportunity to do a mission trip, work in a Catholic hospital, chaparone a trip for some of the high school girls from the local church to go see a few of the convents in Louisiana, and the chance to visit with my fellow Catholic friends (one of whom is, after 2 years, going back to seminary). This summer has been a 2-1/2 month retreat; and while I know this last school year on my very non-Catholic campus will be difficult, my cup has been filled and I'm ready. Hope you all have a blessed day!

Chrissy, that's so nice that you found one of your MOPs at Mass! It's always good to have someone else that understands. I do enjoy these stories of unexpected "Catholic Sightings" in the South. You never know.

Hi Everyone, I had a "Catholic Sighting" of my own this weekend. I am a member of a MOPs (Mothers of Preschoolers) group that is based out of a local Baptist church, which most of the ladies are members of. Yesterday I went to 8 am mass, which I never do and there in the front of the church with her family was a MOP! Nice to know I'm not the only one who might be a little uncomfortable when they start sharing "salvation stories" at MOPs this school year.

Well, the gazebo is 95% completed. Thanks to St Joseph. I don't like completing this on the Sabath, but since time is a factor, I'll have to. So looks like I'm headed to confession.

    Praying for all today.
