Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

Paxvobiscum, If we were of the world, the world would love us, but we are not, and it does not! Anti-Catholicism is not a Southern phenomenon, although it might appear so to folks who have left the comfort of Catholic neighborhoods behind them for less familiar pastures.

I agree, but it infuriates me to no end to be labeled as such! I wish that our respect for the Blessed Mother wouldn't be used in such a derogetory manner.

Isn't it a pity to look at discussing Catholicism as bold But that seems to be the sad truth in the south!

Paxvobiscum, That's pretty bold talking about religion on your first day at work! Yet you have already made a Catholic friend and that's wonderful.

    Hi Paxvobiscum,
That was a horrible thing that lady said to you and your co-worker. That person may have muttered it, but it sounds like she wanted you to hear it. If she only knew she was only getting a fraction of the faith by being protestant, at least it sounds like she is protestant. A non-faith person probably wouldn't care one way or the other. Mary is so much our mother and helper, and dear friend. Jesus gave us such a sweet blessing when he allowed us to call his mother our mother as well. Such a pity, so sad they don't have the joy we do.

I stated a new job Monday. I found a new fellow co-worker who is Catholic also and we were taling about the Church. A lady who walked up overheard us and muttered "Oh Lord, another Mary worshipper"

Looks like my browser hiccupped, so I've deleted my last reply, which wasn't quite a repeat of a previous post, but was redundant.
It's not terribly cold here right now, in fact my refrigerator is set lower. But I'll pray for you who are traveling and living in ice and snow now.

JRPO, hope you are enjoying your very warm weather, and I hope your team won.

Thinking of you all in the cold. Today I watched Cricket all day sitting in 95o F temperature. Its going to be a warm Christmas here in Perth Australia.

    Paganus,
Yes, many, many Hail Mary's said!
It was so scary to drive in. The ice was so bad, it made the roads crunchy. Yikes. So hoping and praying we keep power. God Bless you and keep you warm and safe! sambfive

Sambfive, Yes I had a similar experience - very unpleasant, although y'all are getting more of the white stuff in Southside. I think I prayed 10,000 Hail Marys on the way home - with feeling. Tomorrow the only traveling I will do will be on the Flexible Flyer.
