Catholics in the South

Group created by Parce Domine

Does your local phone book list seventy different churches under thirty separate denominations, twenty more missions and sub-denominations, plus a dozen other religious societies and congregations, but only one Catholic parish? Are you often asked, "If you died right now, do you KNOW you'd go to heaven?"

Do people talk about you in restaurants when you cross yourself for the blessing? Do they roll their eyes or snort when they see a crucifix around your neck?

Do people leave pamphlets on your porch because you have a statue of Mary in your yard, or put tracts on your windshield because you have a rosary hanging from your rear-view mirror?

Do your friends, neighbors, and in-laws pretty much agree that you need converting because you're Catholic, not what they consider "saved" and "born-again?"

Do people of more than three denominations, religions, or organizations come to your house to try to explain what it takes to be a REAL Christian? Have you ever been stared at during an "altar call?" At a wedding?

Or do you live in a part of the South where Catholics aren't the minority, like St. Francisville, Louisiana or Ave Maria, Florida?

Please come in and share your stories and experiences: good, bad, frustrating, humorous, or whatever. If you aren't in or from the South, come on in anyway and have a cup of coffee or glass of sweet iced tea. Join in the conversation and get to know what it's like to be a Catholic in the Bible Belt.

Charles, where in TN is your radio station located? I can't promise financial help, but I can try to pull a few stings that might help.

We have the first and only Catholic Radio Station in Tennessee. The station is operating on an I - Pod, shoestring and a prayer. if we do not get at least 25 people to donate $25 per month then the station will be out of business. please pray for support.

Happy Thanksgiving! Knowing the family would not all be together today, we had our family feast Tuesday. It was wonderful having everyone together. We have SO many blessings to be thankful for!

Peace be with you all! Have a blessed and safe weekend.

    Happy Thanksgiving all!

This morning my two daughters and I all sat down and watched the Macy's parade. It was a true, and rare, family experience, for which I am truly greatful.

Hello, and welcome, FutureCatholic1! Congratulations on coming home to the Church!

Jwder, let us know when you get the magnets. We might have to buy a few from your council, if it's feasible with mailing costs. And yes, I've had to explain about Saint Nicholas! You'd think he was invented by the soft drink company... and in a way, I guess our modern version of "Santa Claus" was. He certainly bears little resemblance to Saint Nicholas or Bishop Nicholas of Smyrna.
I've stolen someone's idea of exchanging gifts on the Feast of Saint Nicholas (Dec. 6, I think) instead of Christmas. That way the focus of Christmas will be mainly on Christ and Christ's Mass. Of course, family, friends, and food will follow later, but nothing before Mass... I hope it works since most of the in-laws are Southern Baptist and have no interest in the saints. (And many of them have little interest in focusing Christmas on Christ, either.)

It is kind of odd to see the local retails with "75% off all Halloween item" displays, pilgrim hat wearingTurkey cutouts that shout "stock up for the big game" and manaquins dressed as Santa all within an asile of each other. Why add the Easter Bunny and some hearts for Valentine's day, so theres no need to change displays seasonally? A Christmas tree vendor has already claimed a vacant lot downtown.

But seriously, my fellow Knights and I will be selling the "Keep Christ in Christmas" car magnets in a few weeks.

Out of curiosity, has anyone else had to explain that Saint Nicholas is a Catholic Saint, and not an advertisment for a soft drink that hangs out with elves?

Totally agree with you. Can't stand being rushed from one season to another. Everytime we're shopping, I make a point of wishing someone a Happy Thanksgiving and when appropriate - a Merry Christmas-not happy holidays. I just refuse to bow to everyone else who's a Christian, but fell into the new custom of forgetting about Christ in Christmas! How can anyone forget that?
Oh well, that's my feeling for the day. Must hurry up and dress for 6pm Mass.
Hope everyone has a Blessed evening and Blessed Sunday.

I understand that in the South, Christmas day could be anywhere from -20 to a balmy 80+, but I'm getting really tired of it being marketed earlier and earlier. Thanksgiving products replace Halloween stuff on November 1st, and they start bringing in the Christmas things and moving them up until it's everywhere even before Advent begins. It's kinda encouraging to see all the "Keep Christ in CHRISTmas" products, but it's also frustrating. And when I respond that I'm not only keeping Christ in Christmas, but I'm keeping MASS in Christmas, too, most people don't get it. At all. Does anyone else try to remind people that there are two parts to the word "Christmas?"

    Hey, runnerbad! Thank YOU!
