Catholic Gardeners

Group created by Gardenman

I know there are a lot of people out there in CAF who garden. Thought it would be fun to start a group where we can discuss gardening and anything related to it.
We can talk about our gardens, favorite plants, favorite styles etc. Professional or amateur alike...it doesn't matter.
Whether you're a seasoned gardener, or just getting started, let's hear from you !

I've never lead a group before, so chime in, people !

To post photos you first have to set up an album in your profile and put the photos there. Then you can copy them to the group site.

So how is everyone's garden doing ?

My roses got decimated seemingly overnight by sawfly larvae, but they're making a comeback.

Anyone here into daylilies? Deadheading them is a pain, but they're worth it. Got lots of new ones this year which haven't bloomed yet, but hopefully will next year.

I'm just getting into Japanese Iris...they say they don't do well in So. Calif. but I'm giving them a try anyway.

How do you post photo's on this site???

Jeannesb I added a picture of my grass area so you can see what I think is fairy rings in my yard. I hope this helps you and I hope hope you don't have them. I've been picking mushrooms like crazy. I may not be able to stop my rings. I have applied high N. fertilizer, soap and keeping it moist for now. I'll let you know if it helps. I wish I had more time I would get some baby shampoo, antiseptic mouth wash and amonia sprayed on it too. I will try to get to that this week. I hope I don't have to dig up the soil and replant.

Jeannesb: Fairy Ring gets it's name from a folk-lorish sort of mindset (for lack of a better word or way to describe it) by suggesting that the ring (an actual circle of dead grass with green grass in the center) is imaginatively a ring of fairies sort of holding hands and forming a circle and dancing around. It's actually a fungus, but like many common names for plants, this one must have been observed and named by someone with a creative mind !

Depending on how vigorous the fungus is, the ring can be anywhere from 6 inches to several feet in diameter. It will basically look like someone took a spray can and sprayed a circle of brown or tan paint and left green grass in the center.

If you do an internet search you can probably find a photo of it online. Sometimes in vast expanses of lawn there can be numerous fairy rings, or just a few, depending on how advanced the fungus is.

Just follow the directions on whatever fertilizer you use. Applying too much can burn your lawn.

Hello Gardenman and Blossom02. I'm not sure what a fairy ring is and wonder if I have FRs. I sent a dirt sample to Texas A&M for analysis and learned that my lawn and flower beds are very low in nitrogen. I have two large oaks and several azalea bushes and apparently they are the culprits. I will fertilize with a high nitrogen fertilizer and hopefully that will do the trick, but I'm still wondering what a fairy ring looks like. Thanks for your help in advance.

Oh thank you Gardenman, I've been watching this grow for a few years now. Keeping it wet could be a problem. We live in Colorado and it can be quite dry. We have had alot of rain. I wish I would have used a high nitrogen fertilizer before the rains started. We have alot of trees, so I'm sure it is from the tree roots. Time to move the hose.

blossom: There is no chemical remedy for fairy ring, but you can fix this by feeding your lawn with a high nitrogen fertilizer, then keep it wet for about 5 days. FR is caused by a fungus and thrives in soil that's high in organic matter or has wood products added to it or decomposing tree roots. Aerate your lawn, feed it and keep wet for 5 days and it should disappear.

I just mowed the lawn and it was nice out but I'm hot.
I have fairy rings in the lawn and I'm wondering if anyone has good ideas of how to take care of this. Any advise would be nice.
