John Lennon, Yggsy...... errrr, um whilst we're talking about devil rock music...

    John Lennon’s Pact with Satan

Oh, man this is turning into a witch hunt, I'm sorry--ya know! But still, what about that? How many of these rock stars have made pacts with the devil?!?!?!?!

    And what about Led Zepplin?!?!??!?!?!?!

And what about this guinea pig? It has sort of an unnatural look in it's eyes....Perhaps it too made a pact with satan to become a rock star!

    Who's Donna? Wasn't she Jerry's girl?

No not Gerry-err, Jerry's girl. She was married to Keith Godchaux, the keyboard player who took over after Pigpen died. Keith died too, sometime in eighties, I think. Car accident, if I recall correctly. They've had bad, bad luck with keyboard players. The one who took the spot after Keith--Brent Midlaand only lasted a short while, then died of a drug overdose sometime in the nineties. Then I think they got Bruce Hornsby? He didn't die, just left-- a smart move. Because the position of keyboards appears cursed. Then Tom Constanten--err--I mean Vince Welnick, the new guy came on the scene not too long ago. Tom played with the keyboards very briefly before Ron McKerrin (Pig Pen) took over. It's all too much to keep up with, sorry I'm bet I'm boring you. Ron was awesome though, I'm tellin you.

Hey, I'm not here to defend the rampant hedonistic tendencies of the Grateful Dead. But their lyrics are cleaner in general then most of the stuff out these days, that I've heard. Afford me a little nostalgia over the music every so often, k? That's all. I'm more into classical these days, really. That's about all I listen to.

Still playing with satanic references seems to me to be a whole other deal. Even at my darkest points thankfully I knew to stay away from that. And one would think that Ronnie James Dio, a "pre-VII cradle Italian Catholic who went to Catholic schools", should've know that too. But, anyway.....just sayin'

So you're saying that the new Dead does all "born again" Christianized music? Praise the Lord!

No, thankfully I'm not saying that. I asked John about that. It's just some born again contingent of their fans, it would seem.

Question: Did the Beatles or the Grateful Dead ever write a tune as blatantly pro-Christ as Sabbath's "After Forever"?

The Ballad of John & Yoko?

See, you play with fire.... might get burned.

Right. But that 'fire' can take on many guises.

It can come in the form of fanatical fans idolizing and going nuts over Elvis or the Beatles.

It can come in the form of music that promotes drug use. How many millions throughout the years have 'baked' on psychedelics or other hard drugs at Dead shows? I'm not trying to pick on the Dead, but I think it's safe to say that they're one of the pioneers of that whole scene.

It can come in the form of rap music glorifying sex and violence.

    Etc. Etc.

Meh many of that ilk, think everything non-fundamentalist is of the devil. The problem with most fundies is that they don't see the difference between hedonism and satanism. Gerry and Pigpen were hedonists, but not satanic. There was a brief time where they were interested in finding out more about Druids and "tapping into that energy", but they were never into wicca or witchcraft, in fact they'd have been offended by the insinuation.

But although hedonism isn't directly satanic, it's still devil's work, right? Especially the whole drug related scene.

Actually, John says it was Donna Godchaux was the one most into the "born again" scene.

    Who's Donna? Wasn't she Jerry's girl?

Robert Hunter, the lyricist is a Roman Catholic (not sure he's practicing or not), but many of his lyrics have biblical references.

Reminds me of Sabbath's second singer, Ronnie James Dio. He's a pre-VII cradle Italian Catholic who went to Catholic schools. And he uses tons of Catholic references in his songs.

As a matter of fact, did you know that Gerry played for a while in a band called "The Legion of Mary"? The real Legion people came to hear him play, and liked him. True.

Gerry as in Jerry Garcia? No, I didn't know. Interesting.

"He did, however, wonder just why there were crucifixes in their stage shows, on their person, and inlaid into the fretboard of Tony Iommi. Truth be told, they started wearing crucifixes after being "cursed" by a group of self-described satanists who approached them to play a black mass. When they told their visitors that Black Sabbath was no more satanic than Vincent Price, they were entertainers.... Iommi went home that night and made them all crosses to wear for protection. Ozzy still wears his today, as do the rest of them."

    Wow, pretty crazy.

See, you play with fire.... might get burned.

But you are aware that the old Grateful Dead has been singled out for a long time by Christian groups as being "satanic" also, right?

It's funny you should mention the Dead, Ralph because last night John had their website up on the computer screen (as per usual), and there's this "steal your face" skull with a cross in it, I've seen it there several times, and I'm curious so I'm clicking away on that and finding all these pages filled with heavy duty born again material. I'll see if I can find the link later, if you want let me know. One of the members must of had a conversion? Maybe. It seems so.

Well, they didn't write these songs but the Gerry Garcia Band sung them. He and Donna did a lot of Gospel, actually.

Well, is it kind of similar to Voodoo then, if these musicians try to mix religion with the satanic?

Nah, they weren't into casting spells and hexes on people.
    They were showmen, not shamans.

Here's an excerpt regarding why they had crosses in their stage show and wore them all the time.

"He did, however, wonder just why there were crucifixes in their stage shows, on their person, and inlaid into the fretboard of Tony Iommi. Truth be told, they started wearing crucifixes after being "cursed" by a group of self-described satanists who approached them to play a black mass.
