    Oh, I don’t know.

What don't you know? Here's more.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is, charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, longanimity, mildness, faith, modesty, continency, chastity. Against such there is no law." Gal 5:22-23

St. Stephen was hardly “smooth and mellow.” He was made the first Christian Martyr for his soaring and unabashed evangelism.

St. Stephen was filled with the Holy Ghost. That can only mean that he possessed and utilized all of His fruits. Hence, he was VERY smooth, mellow, charitable, joyful, peaceful, patient, kind, good, mild etc. Where does the text he wasn't any of those?

If you want to consider what makes a man wise, it is noted that “the beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord”

True. But as St. Thomas Aquinas defines, wisdom is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

“Do not angle for compliments. God’s favor is lost in the pursuit of men's praise. ‘If I still seek to please men,’ the Apostle warns, ‘I should not be Christ’s servant.’ When Paul ceased pleasing men, he became Christ’s slave. Through thick and thin opinion the soldier of Christ marches, neither elated by flattery nor crushed by adverse criticism.”

Evangelizing by the fruit of the Spirit should have nothing to do with "seeking praise" or "compliments". In fact, it should render the opposite effect.

So have you ever soaringly proclaimed the Gospel like St. Stephen in a crowded mall, grocery store, bar, restaurant, street corner, Protestant church, or other? How did it go?

We're all salesmen trying to sling the goods. We all gotta improvise and adapt. Take it from Pablo.

"...just as I try to please everyone in every way, not seeking my own benefit but that of the many, that they may be saved." 1 Corinth 10:33

Smoothe and mellow. That's the way the wise men do it.

Oh, I don’t know. St. Stephen was hardly “smooth and mellow.” He was made the first Christian Martyr for his soaring and unabashed evangelism. If you want to consider what makes a man wise, it is noted that “the beginning of wisdom is fear of the Lord” (and not, I might add, the handshake of mortal men).

St. Jerome (who was fiery and uncompromising himself) has some relevant commentary:

“Do not angle for compliments. God’s favor is lost in the pursuit of men's praise. ‘If I still seek to please men,’ the Apostle warns, ‘I should not be Christ’s servant.’ When Paul ceased pleasing men, he became Christ’s slave. Through thick and thin opinion the soldier of Christ marches, neither elated by flattery nor crushed by adverse criticism.”

I believe it was Pablo himself who asked, “what concord hath Christ with Belial?”

“And thou, O son of man, fear not, neither be thou afraid of their words: for thou art among unbelievers and destroyers, and thou dwellest with scorpions. Fear not their words, neither be thou dismayed at their looks: for they are a provoking house. And thou shalt speak my words to them, if perhaps they will hear.”

Satan is the salesman and the deal-maker.

All these will I give thee, if falling down thou wilt adore me.”

Stevie Ray Vaughan & Jeff Beck

Cool clip. Jeffrey sounds a little out-gunned there though. He needs to turn up his amp a little, and use a pick instead of his fingers. Get a little agro.

    Stevie's all over him.
