BookChrysalis Club

Group created by Sunflower15

Book reviews, ratings, recommendations, suggestions and enjoyment! Preferably with Catholic, or religious emphasis [even if non-Catholic].
Reading helps us to step into the authors' shoes and experience life differently from our regular daily lives. It also distracts us, and inspires us. Are there any book-lovers out there?

    Hi JakiRoch,
    Welcome! Any book that is religious, or by a Catholic or Christian author, or of any religion, that might be insightful to us Catholics, and WHY, is fine.
    Anything makes us think...and ponder about our faith and values and beliefs...
    Enjoy!
    Maria

    I'm new to this group and was wondering if someone can fill me in on what exactly you are looking for as far as book reviews, recommendations, etc. Can we review/ suggest any religious book or do you have a narrower category you'd like us to stick to?

    Unlike some modern offerings (think Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol) that distract readers with religious and philosophical musings cast as attacks against the Church, “A Canticle for Leibowitz” is infused and enriched by them. It’s not only a compelling, well-written story, it’s an allegorical tale that might encourage readers to explore and struggle with their own beliefs.”

    A review and reading selections here:

    About Shusaku Endo: if you have a strong stomach try The Poison and the Sea, based on a true story of the medical school at Kyushuu University where a group of downed American aviators were dissected alive. The cover was to do "medical research" on blood loss etc. But Endo goes into the minds of those educated members of the medical community that actually carried out the experiments. He contrasts a Christian perspective with the Japanese sense of feeling a mild sense of embarrassment were anyone to find out what they had been doing. It's a fascinating book and one that didn't make Endo any friends amongst his fellow countrymen. I lived in Japan for 23 years and read this back in the 70's but it was unforgettable.

    I'm currently reading, What Makes Us Catholic? by Thomas H Groome.
    It is interesting because he claims, and makes a good point, that we are also 'culturally' Catholic even if we don't practice the religion. I can't believe how many things we have 'accumulated' in terms of cultural mores and behaviors that are the same across time and worldwide [even if we are 'colored' by ethnic or socio-economic cultures as well]...
    For example, a sense of sacramentality: 'finding the infinite in the finite' things carry religious meaning/truths;
    that the spiritual is found in everyday life;
    a concern for justice without borders;
    a reverence for tradition;
    a belief in the intrinsic goodness of mankind, as well as in the 'fallen' twist of our nature.
    Maybe I have been assuming that everyone saw the world/life this way as well...when they don't!

    Sweetpeace: No, but if you find it, please let us know! I love Sr. Faustina!

    Danceforjoy11: Wow! I never heard of any of these! Now I have to find them... I have never heard of Kelly either...do you know of a website about him?

    1catholic: I have to look for Island of the World...it reminds me a little of "I am David', did you see that movie? It is one of the few that made me actually cry...

    djeter: thanks for the links...I'm reading....

    I have been a member of a Catholic book club for the past 5 years. we usually read a book a month and meet to discuss. always looking for new books.

    currently reading A Call To Joy : Living in the presence of God by Matthew Kelly...highly recommend. On my 3rd read of this book...first time read it in one sitting and cried all the way through it...then read it again. I am now rereading for our book club discussion. It's fresh and inspiring and a quick read. His style is very accessible. You will learn all about the dance for joy!

    Also enjoyed his book The Rhythm of Life:Living Every Day with Passion and Purpose about how to be the best version of yourself. ..eccumentical, but a Catholic spin on The Purpose Driven Life and all the other books like that all rolled into one.

    Rediscovering Catholicism: Journeying Towards Our Spiritual North Star is one that will energize your faith and is a call to break out of being lukewarm. Especially toward the end of this book I started highlighting more and more...and lots of stars and ! in the margins which means if was really hitting home to me.

    For those not familiar with Matthew Kelly, he runs a foundation and is a motivational speaker. When he was in his teens he received...and continues to receive messages from God (under official investigation by the church).
