I graduated school in 2007 after spending by whole schooling life at my Catholic school. No one in my graduating year attends Church. I also fell away for some time but thankfully God brought me back. From my own experience young people leave the Church for two main reasons, and we must admit our problems before we can solve them.

    1. Education
Im not sure what it is like now but for the 12 years I went to a Catholic school the religion classes were simply a free period where we could write in our journals and draw pictures they were not read by the teachers. Then for our final two years of high school religion classes were about life in general rather than christian life. Students need apologetics because young people crave knowlege, and we are taught not to follow things blindly. We were never taught that religion actually has logical reasoning as well as faith. I always questioned how do we know Catholicism is the right religion. And we were simply not taught these sorts of things.

    2. Engaging in Church Life and Mass
In my country (Australia) I can see protestant youth groups growing by the masses, yet our own Catholic youth groups appear to be dying. Young people need to be engaged. In this case I think we need to look at the protestant denominations and learn something from them. I also think music could be a great draw card into the Church. But as soon as someone mentions using contemporary instruments in the mass people get up in arms.

I went to mass today, looked around, 99% of the people attending were over the age of 40, with the majority of those looking to be older than 60. Before i continue i want to say the miracle of the mass is beautiful and in no way is what im about to say meant to take away from it. The music was utterly horrible. An organ playing, with a chior of 5 people singing the blandest music I ever hear. Mass is meant to be something powerful. I honestly believe that if we improved our music minisrtys we could engage so many more young people. But because the mass music can be so dry people stop thinking what the mass is about and start thinking they cant wait to get out of there. Loosing focus on the mass, what it is about, and eventually start leaving.

For once i think we need to look at the protestant churches who in my country are growing in numbers in every day. Although they are not Christs church, they sure do know how to evangelise young people, and this is what we need to start doing.

Hello all I'm new to CAF and I am really excited to be here. I'm just wondering what are some ways that seem to work for everyone to evangelize people in a way that reaches everyone i.e. the unchurched, the protestant, the "cafeteria" catholic, etc.... I have a variety of people at my work and only a short time to do things right. What about on the street?????

Please everyone, please pray for the conversion of my county. We are having a Mass this week on Wednesday with the intention of the conversion of our county. We have only a small Catholic population in our county at this time. If you would like to know exactly which county and state I am referring to, PM me and I will probably tell you.

Our church has embraced a program called prison ministries/angel tree . Evangilizing the families of inmates starting with a gift for the children at Christmas. The cool thing is we have room to put together our own Christmas program for these families. It can be very rewarding and effective if the parish is in a city. All the children are registered by mom or dad from prison. We mailed pictures, hand made Christmas cards by their children and spiritual literature to the inmate. The children get a gift but the family gets a spiritual message as well. Anybody interested google prison ministries angel tree program.

The first thing I did was read the book "Catholisism for Dummies" I love the book, but not too crazy about the name.

I had a co-worker that was studing the various religions and found out I was Catholic. He had the personality of one that likes to debate and admitted that. I told him upfront."I am still in the discovery stage of my faith. I am not a debator. I am only an infant in my spiritual walk, I don't know all that I would like to know, but I will share what I do know."

He told me that he respected that and it led to more converstations between the two of us. It helped me to grow and helped him to better understand our faith. Then the company transferred him to another shift.

Hello! I'm hoping to pick up some evangelism tips. I was an evangelical Christian for 10 year before I came home to the Catholic Church. But back in my evangelical days evangelism seemed so much more straight forward. We Catholics don't have "The 4 Spiritual Laws" spiel, we have a mountain of wonderful theology...but where to begin?

Here's my latest evangelization trap: An innocent discussion of quantum physics with a matrix of five scientists and their views on God and the cosmos. The trap is when the atheist chooses his hero Weinberg he also has to admit he is just one of five and is the only one demanding "proof" or "evidence" from the others ... in other words, using his "religion" of science as a standard. I've noticed this tends to take the wind out of the superior "Brights" a bit.

Here is the contact I had with Catholics and their approach with me before I decided to become a Catholic.

As a comfortable evangelical Protestant in the Reformed Tradition, I was not dissatisfied with what I knew about the Bible or my faith.

I was not seeking a new way at all. By one of those chance decisions, my wife and I visited a Catholic Benedictine monastery as part of our long-standing and weekend-based day trips to quiet, restful places in Florida.

We could tell we were on holy ground as soon as we arrived at the monastery.

We began visiting the monastery and talking with the Benedictine monks who ran their bookstore and gift shop. We never talked with the monks about Catholicism because we were definitely NOT Catholic and had no desire to become one.

We did like their easy, friendly manner, and their good humor. In fact, they were so welcoming at one point we felt that we needed to make sure they were not misled into thinking we were Catholic, so we mentioned one day that we were not Catholic, without hesitation came the reply with their warm smile, "that’s OK" and we continued our conversation of whatever we had been talking about — nothing to do with religion.

So, in our case, we only talked with two Catholics and the only thing they said about Catholicism before we decided to become Catholic was that it was OK that we were NOT Catholic.

Perhaps this situation illustrates the truth of Pope Benedict XVI’s September 9, 2007, address on his visit to Heiligenkreuz Abbey: "A monastery is above all this: a place of spiritual power."

Hi I'm new to the site. Cradle Catholic, left 1982,returned 2001 almost left again in 2003 to a Baptist Church. Past two years at my parish helped assist at youth group 9th grade. now assisting RCIA. Fundamentalists with sincerity, money, studies in Greek,Latin Hebrew, philosophy, psychology and years of educational study (many fundamentalists even have masters or doctorates in their education) will suck alot of Catholics from the Church. Our priest said sadly Catholics in general don't know their faith and "jump ship."And yes the "tracts" I see them periodically especially around low income areas and certain evangelical places where someone I know has been married or a baby baptized Alot of these tracts are by Jack Chick. Karl Keating has a book Catholicism and Fundamentalism : ISBN 0-89870-177-5 or ISBN 0-89870-195-3 Excellent read going to the root of Christian fundamentalism with refutations to their research.
