Their website does not really do them justice, as they do not update it often. They really are a wonderful place and group of monks, and I think they are more interested in the things of God than in maintaining fancy websites! One of the monks also kept a blog with his sermons, and I will try to find that if he is still writing it.

    Luigi,

From what you have said about yourself, I think you made the right choice - at least for the choices in California that I am familiar with. Prince of Peace is the most traditional. I still would like visit Our Lady of Clear Creek Abbey in Oklahoma someday:

    http://clearcreekmonks.org/

as they seem very orthodox too. I do not think they accept Oblates.
Anyway, I hope you can visit Prince of Peace soon, and I'm glad your discernment has been rewarded.
    God bless, Chris
Thank you, my friend! In my prelimary contact with them, they seem awesome.

Pray for an increase in faith, then listen in your heart.

The truths of our religion have always been true no matter what people thought was true.

God has been with you all along throughout your journey and will be with you to the end.

    God bless +
    Peace be with you+

instead of the Liturgy of the Hours valid?

I am not speaking of it as a private devotion. I am asking if praying the MD is "praying with the Church"?

I mean absolutely no disrespect to those who pray the MD in any way. I am interested in it, but I want to be praying with the Church, above all.

    Thank you.

Hello Jason. It is interesting that you should post this now. Yesterday I made my full oblation at St Gregory's Abbey. Yesterday was our annual Spring Oblate Day. Were you there? I also received your message and I'll probably continue this discussion by email, though since it is the middle of the night as I write this, that will be later today or tomorrow. Indeed I hope you do consider becoming a part of the St Gregory family. Welcome.

    I everyone!

It's been a couple years since I have prayed the Liturgy of Hours, and I've since lost my faith in the Church, but oddly I am still attracted to Benedictine spirituality. Well, maybe its not so odd since I know of several Benedictine oblates who are protestant. One of the advantages of the Rule of Benedict is that it predates the unfortunate schisms of history. I look forward to learning, laughing and loving with the rest of you.

Hi guys. I hope you don't mind me joining - I'm a wife and mother, and a Benedictine Oblate as of 6/7/08. Great to see this group created.

I'm too am a Catholic wife and mother. I've been attracted to Benedictine spirituality for a few decades. Although my attraction goes back many years, the RB has been a part of my life only in the last 5 years and intermittent at that. The process of 'becoming' has been slowly unfolding. Yup, I wear the medal....blessed by a wonderful Trappist. I'm interested in input from professed Benedictines and all others who share interest in Benedictine spirituality.

The nurse aid that bathes and cares for your relatives needs instruction to be sure the medal is in place each day. This should be part of the care plan the aid refers to each as day he/she cares for them. Only their custodian may give that instruction to the nursing home.

Hi Kristen and others - Thanks for the welcome!

For those who are wondering who this "Kristen" person is and why you were invited to this group: Welcome! I'm doing a brief search of the Forums for those who have posted/expressed interest in Benedictine Spirituality.

I won't be at all offended if you decline membership; I just wanted to invite you -- and if you know of anyone else who might be interested, please invite him or her! Thanks!

To start us off (I hope ), a small and practical question regarding the St. Benedict Jubilee Medal:

I have two family members in nursing homes. Both are life-long Catholics (though somewhat badly formed and with no knowledge of Benedictine spirituality) and both suffer from frequent bouts of short-term memory loss and some depression related to health problems and the death of a spouse. Due to its great benefits, I would like to provide them both with a good method of wearing the Medal, perhaps even with a scapular medal, too.

So: Is there such a thing as a scapular/St. Benedict Jubilee Medal, especially for those who need something simple and low-key?

If the person can't remember to wear the medal (perhaps to put it back on after an assisted bath), can the same benefit be gained from having a medal displayed or placed in the nursing home room?

    Thanks for any input!

Welcome to all comers! I'm hoping to start a casual discussion of the Benedictine spirituality that I find so helpful and attractive. I'm a Catholic wife and mother who is still a newbie to St. Benedict and his Rule -- no formal training or oblation, just some reading and rather feeble attempts to live what I've read. And, I wear and recommend the St. Benedict Crucifix. So, I especially welcome input from professed Benedictines and Benedictine oblates.

St. Benedict, please pray for us!
St. Scholastica, please pray for us!
St. Frances of Rome, please pray for us!
All you Benedictine saints, please pray for us!
