OCD/Scrupulosity Group

Group created by AFCatholic

This group is for those who suffer from a religious form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). From the Scrupulous Anonymous website "Older people may be troubled about past sins, others agonize about problems of obedience and purity, and many worry about sin where there is no sin. Their fear and anxiety prevent them from making decisions lest they be wrong ones." This forum is for discussion and encouragement.

Hi everyone. I need some advice. This morning I went to visit my great grandmother and was talking with the lady that was staying with her. She was talking about her grandson's wife was having pains and they did not know why and it ended up being her birthcontrol so she got her tubes tide. Of course I didnt say anything and I feel guilty because I feel like because I didnt say something that it means I condoned what that person did which is against the teachings of the church. Of course I didnt say oh well I totally understand why she did it, but I also didnt say that I dont' agree with what she did either. Do you think this would be something I should confess before going to communion for Easter. I know that it may not be a mortal sin, but I feel like such a coward.

I know he doesn't want us to be miserable, but I fele bad that the thing that make me happy aren't what I feel they should be. I DO enjoy mass, and praying rosary and whatnot, but I also just looove a scary movie, or a murder mystery, or a long talk on the phone. But lately, I just can't enjoy them like I use to, since I decided to live my faith like I'm suppose to, instead of being a Cafeteria Catholic. I mean, like,I'm doing the detail thing again. I feel like, if I told you more about what I do, you'd understand that it must be horrible and offensive, even though logic tells me otherwise.

I understand this feeling shondrea.......but remember He did not save us to be miserable and anxious did He? Of course not!!!! Life is a balance, take time for yourself, then you can give yourself more freely to others.

But there are so many times where I feel like what I'm enjoying must be sinful, or that getting really excited about something that isn't religious must be bad. Like, last night, my friend from across country called me from a fan convention, telling me about the little pin button's she bought me, with pictures of my favorite characters drawn really cute on them. I squealed like a little girl, but then felt bad about getting excited over something so trivial.

Shondrea, yes I feel that way sometimes. But being happy is not sinful. Jesus said "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid." I

    Good moooorning.

Well, so...does anyone else ever feel guilty over their hobbies? Like, you shouldn't be happy of having joy from something, even something harmless, because it's not something religious?

You all are amazing people. I am so inspired to be a part of this group. We all sound so similar, different details but the same core condition. Couldn't agree more with footdoc about getting help. Meds have helped me some. Above all, sacraments, and focusing on others and trusting in the Lord who forgave his crucifiers and told the good thief he would be with Him in paradise that day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Happy Easter!

Thank you Kevin, Shondrea, Mike, and footdoc. It means so much to me that you would take the time to respond and help me. Mike, I am not connected to most of my thoughts in the sense that I do not mean or believe them at all. But sometimes I feel like things I say in my head are said intentionally, because they feel different from some of my "intrusive" thoughts. Sometimes I think I am intentionally torturing myself by saying or anticipation what the OCD thought would be. For example, if I had violent OCD thoughts, then I would expect the thought even though it hasn't entered my mind yet, and then it would play out in my mind.

I went to sleep peacefully last night after watching Father Corapi's talk on Good Friday that some of you may have seen. Part of what he said was about suffering, and how the only answer he will give to someone who questions why they are suffering is that God loves them. What he said helped me a lot. But for some reason I woke up with this anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach. I started speaking to God and asking him to take away my anxiety and doubt before Easter. As I am typing right now I am beginning to feel more at peace. I find that when I pray by speaking to God in a simple manner, I feel better. I ask Him to search my heart and let it speak for me.
