OCD/Scrupulosity Group

Group created by AFCatholic

This group is for those who suffer from a religious form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). From the Scrupulous Anonymous website "Older people may be troubled about past sins, others agonize about problems of obedience and purity, and many worry about sin where there is no sin. Their fear and anxiety prevent them from making decisions lest they be wrong ones." This forum is for discussion and encouragement.

Hi POML, it sounds like it could be a scruple/obsession. When God calls someone, there may be anxiety and resistance, but there is usually also a sense of peace, from what I understand. Still, it would be a good idea to talk to a priest. And pray about it. Perhaps say a novena for clarity on this issue. I have been struggling, too, with the possibility of a vocation which I don't really think I have (although I find the way of life attractive) and I know how painful it can be to be uncertain and pulled both ways. I don't have magic answers, but you're welcome to PM me if you want to talk about it. I will pray for God to show you His will and give you peace.

I have an unrelated question - I went to Confession on Saturday, but then remembered on Sunday that I had eaten meat on Friday, completely not thinking about the fact that it was Friday. I have been a vegetarian for over a decade and literally just started eating meat again, so usually for my Friday penance I say additional prayers and abstain from chocolate. I did that as usual. I have read that we are not required to abstain from meat on Friday if we do another penance, but it's still bothering me. Do I need to mention it at my next confession? Or should I just let it go?

The last few years actually 5 i have felt a strong inclination to be a nun but the thing is I don't want or have any interest in this life. I cry and I get all anxious whenever i have this thought. I know their is some anxiety actually that comes with these thoughts but honestly thinking about never being married or having kids makes me very sad and very unhappy. I don't want to go against the will of God but I feel this is not the right life for me. I was dignosed with ocd 5 years ago and this is when this vocation started . I can't lie when I have this thought it makes me feel disgusted. Yes i love God but the thought be being a nun repulses me. I feel lost and very unhappy at the moment. I just want these thoughts to stop.

Thank you all for your prayers I do feel at peace at the moment, I am going to try very hard to keep it up. I have had a bad year I lost my brother who I was very close to my oldest girl has drifted apart from me and I never see her and my dog who is 12 nearly 13 is in a bad way so everything got on top of me hence the antidepressants. I know now I should have perserverd with prayer and I would probably not have had to go on tablets also had trouble with my throat which didn't help but I'm not making excuses. I do feel so much better if you could remember my family in your prayers I would be so grateful. God Bless you all

BoistonEA, you are welcome! That is great news to hear! Congratulations! When ever you mind wants to dwell on the past, simply say Jesus I trust in you. Then focus your mind elsewhere. I agree with timeandeternity, don't do anything without first talking to your doctor. You are very correct, one day at a time, take some time to enjoy the success you have had!

I had a Priest tell me once, that we also need to look at the good we do, not just the bad. So take time to thank God for your success and praying for you!

Congratulations Boiston! So glad to hear the confession went well!
I wouldn't stop taking antidepressants unless your doctor recommends that you do. A strong spiritual life and a deep trusting relationship with Christ will always do wonders, and medication isn't the answer to everything; however, if you do have a legitimate medical problem, it is important to keep the medication going unless your doctor tells you otherwise.
Have a great week everyone! You are in my prayers!

Thank you Mustang 1971 For the advice you gave me, I followed it through sat last night having said the Rosary and wrote everything down and went to Confession this morning and I think I made a good one because I felt at peace afterwards. I think Our Lord meant me to find this site, I am going to try extra hard not to dwell on the past and pray more and hopefully I will keep this feeling. I'm even thinking about stop taking the antidepressants but I know at the moment that is a bit ambitious I will just take it slowly, one day at a time. God Bless you all I will certainly keep in touch and tell you of my achievements

You are welcome BoistonEA! I pray that you can make it to confession on Saturday! Praying a decade of the Rosary is a great start. Think of baby steps, just keep trying. Remember that God knows everything, he knows you are trying. I have been asking Jesus to help me to trust. Why don't you ask Jesus to help you to forget the past and to teach you how to forgive yourself?

    God Bless
