So hard to decide! I think I like the movie the Fellowship of the Ring the best, because I like the Shire and that movie has the most Shire scenes in it. For the books, I think probably the Return of the King.

Mine is what Haldor laments when he has to blindfold the fellowship before bringing them deeper into Lorien. I use it in my signature:

I definitely prefer the book to the movies. Peter Jackson did a terrific job with the scenery and made Boromir more sympathetic than the book. The first movie was delightful and the changes made to adapt to film made sense. Not so for the second and third movie.

I agree with all of you. There is a certain magic in the books that is nearly impossible to replicate in the movies. However, I believe that Peter Jackson did a fabulous job bringing the story to life on the big screen.
I'm actually still reading the books. I finished the first and second, but I havn't read the third yet. It's on my list of books to read!

To JA25, both are good, but the book is stupendous. Much of Tolkien's artistry with words is lost in the movie; indeed when there actually is a direct quote from the books it makes one sit up and say WOW as the actual words stand out that much.

But the movies do do justice to the themes of the book, mostly. And the cinematography is amazing.

I love Lord of the Rings!! Haven't read them in a while, I should pick the books up again myself. I also agree that thebooks are better than the movies; so much was left out or changed, and sometimes the most important stuff was the victim.

In answer to JA25;I definitely like the books better. 9 times out of 10 books are better than the movies. Although sometimes a movie can add something cool only alluded to in a book.

I agree that a lot of the names in the Lost Tales are hard to follow, particularly because they changed as Tolkien's work progressed. The first time through, I simply read them without trying to learn all the names just to get the gist of the stories. Then I reread them because the stories are so amazing. Honestly, if I had kids and if I could pronounce all those names and places the lost tales would become bedtime stories in my house - the books are wonderful, and I also think the film makers did an excellent job at retelling the stories.

I haven't read the books yet, but I have it from good sources that although Peter Jackson did an amazing job with the movie adaptations, the books are where the true soul of the trilogy lies.
