Group created by lizaanne

This is a group for women who choose to cover their heads for Mass, Adoration, Benediction, Confession, Prayer, or even on a daily basis. A place to come together to talk about this very personal devotion, share stories, support each other, and talk about resources for headcoverings.

This is NOT a place for debate or for questioning anyone's motives. Those conversations can take place on the main forums as appropriate, but not in this group.

    Hi KimAnn,
I remember the first time I showed up to a Novo Ordo Mass veiled, another woman, who has known me for decades, laughed and said "oh, what, are we supposed to be Muslim now?"
I just offered it up, and kept veiling. Thanked God I had something else to offer up to Him.
When people ask why I veil, I say "it helps me remember I'm worshipping God, along with the Blessed Mother, the angels and saints." Some people have come up to me after Mass and thanked me for reminding them to be reverent. I hadn't spoken to any of these people, they just saw me covering my head, and had that reaction. So, it calls people back to the Lord, and to worship, and I don't have to say a word.
    God bless,
    Barbara

It's really a shame that people have to fight over things like that -- there is only one way of doing such things, so why people find a need to fight is beyond me. Very sad. Hopefully you have now found a parish that does not have so much drama.

It looks like you could drape this over your shoulders if you're wearing something sleeveless, and put it over your head in church. I'm just posting it here because I thought it looked very striking.
Wow, that's gorgeous, alas I can only crochet. And nothing that technical either! Ravelry.com is a great place to find patterns.

No concrete evidence. Just a feeling that it should be done in my case. In the end it's for the love of God, feeling that for some reason He wants this from me and giving it because I love Him. That's the reasoning and basis in my situation.

    Godspeed.

So glad you have a good experience! Hopefully your husband will become more supportive once he gets used to it.

St. Catherine of Siena in S. Phoenix has many women who veil, but I encourage you to veil no matter where you go. I felt called to veil and began a few years ago. I attend Ss. Simon and Jude Cathedral and there are some women who veil too at the Mass we attend.

A skinny headband is a hair adornment, something that someone uses to fix or hold their hair in a given manner. It is not intended to cover one's head. The head is not covered, a strip across the top is somewhat covered. I personally feel these are a cop out as an excuse for a head covering.

I know the wide type you are talking about, and I think that falls more in line with "covering the head".

As far as being a distraction - a thing is only a distraction in so much as it is new. Once people see you covering your head on a regular basis, they will get over it and not even notice anymore.

Don't let THEIR distraction be a distraction to YOU in your own devotion. Just do what you want, and at some point they will get over it.

I too have a cowlick and find a side part and slightly longer side -swept bangs are easiest to handle. Either that our regular use of a straightening iron : )

Yes, it's the same Jesus at both masses. I cover in the presence of the Eucharist whether there is a mass or not.

Six years ago my pastor asked me to cantor the Latin Mass in our parish. I would sing a High Mass, then drive back to our main church for the Novo Ordo Mass. I realized it was silly to veil for one Mass but not the other, so I ended up wearing a veil to both Masses. Now, I find it comforting to acknowledge my femininity before God and others, though few women at the Novo Ordo Mass veil, invariably someone comes up to me after Mass and says they are glad to see me wearing the veil. It seems to spark something in people. It reminds me to be reverent before the holy sacrifice of the Mass, perhaps it reminds others of that as well.

CruceSignati (Dec 5th): A month late... sorry... I have to say, I have never been in a situation where wearing a skirt has been seen as somehow the "crazy" option, particularly not for church, as I was raised to see Sunday Mass as being something worth dressing up for, and skirts can often be seen as something a bit more formal, at least in England, where I'm from. It's good that you respect your mother's concerns, but I wondered whether the skirt issue might be something where she fears you doing something different from her, particularly as regards your relationship with God and the Church. Maybe she is worried about you feeling the pressure to conform to some kind of gender stereotype which she doesn't feel she has raised you to? It seems like this is something to do with your personal taste, and a difference of opinion you are perfectly entitled to have, and to make your own choices about. Maybe think about the way you explain your choice to your mother: if you say that you want to dress more elegantly for Mass because you feel it's important, and you think skirts are a good way to do this, that you're comfortable with, then it doesn't sound like she would have much room to object. But skirts aren't somehow sacred: they are just items of clothing (although they can be very pretty and elegant). It's dressing in what you think is appropriate for Mass that is important rather than the precise outfit that you wear. Speaking personally, my favourite winter combination would be black trousers, heels, and a nice sweater (but that might be because my winter skirts are a bit boring). As for veiling, take it slowly, God doesn't pressure anyone... maybe let your mother get used your wearing a skirt first...

Hi, I'm wondering about something concerning the wearing of skirts to Mass and I thought I might ask you all about it. My mom doesn't want me to turn into a "crazy skirt lady" as she calls them. Over the Christmas season, I decided to wear a skirt to Mass because I look and feel a bit more like a woman. But my mom voiced her concern, and out of respect for her I went back to wearing pants.
Also, I want to start veiling, but heaven only knows what she would say to that!

Answers to veiling can be found in your mass book, go to symbols, some have a black star by them, some dont, the true Roman Church teaches children about veils these are great mysteries, but let me give you a hint, black means something and represents a church from the past, nuns, and widows, the white are chosen they have and are dedicated to Christ and his church, and so read your mass book, the latin is better,,,I would never have known that if I didnt ask the HOLY MOTHER

I tried veiling at my church...I felt funny wearing a BLACK veil..( I am 54 and in a relationship for 10 years..) I don't want to feel like I look like a widow or giving off funeral images! lol So I stopped... I decided to have one made instead. Went to a fabric storeand found some beautiful deep blue lacey material The perimeter will have a rounded edge instead of a traditional triangled point. I'm excited about it!! I will then be one of only TWO women who veil in my church!!
