Hello. Is this group still functioning? It doesn't appear to have seen any action in a couple of years(?)

Hey, just updating - hope everyone is having a wonderful summer so far!

The talk that I mentioned a while back went quite well and we've established a group to attend the first Sunday TLM in Clifton each month, Deo Gratias!

The way I look at it is that there are crazy people everywhere. When I was involved with the charismatic movement there were a many people that distorted Church teaching and, likewise, in the SSPX there are people (sede-leaning) that can distort Church teaching. To me, what is of key importance is finding a parish where the Priest does not tolerate the spread of these ideas. It's one thing to have them in your parish and another entirely for their errors to be accepted and spread about. Thankfully, I have not found an SSPX parish that has encouraged sede views though those people may pop in from time looking for a traditional Mass. However, if it provides any peace of mind, a lot of the extreme sedes will avoid the Society altogether.

I also pray for the resolution of the Society's canonical status and would like to live to see the day when attending the TLM and participating fully in Traditional Catholic Liturgy and Sacraments is not seen as an underground affair.

    Thanks onegin!

I am deeply attached to the EF Mass and although I still attend the OF from time to time (I attended today), I would like to attend the EF Mass more often; and I would also like the option of receiving the other EF Sacraments.

Unfortunately, there are no traditionalist orders in my area apart from the SSPX. They have a chapel about 30 mins from my home. I have often thought about attending but I am reluctant to do so until their canonical status is resolved. I know they are not in schism, but I would feel disobedient if I attended. I know this wouldn't be the case but it's just how I feel.

It is interesting that you mention extreme parishioners. I had a feeling that the SSPX would attract Catholics with extreme views, and I don't think I would like to be around them. It unsettles me to think that there are some Catholics who think Benedict XVI is an anti-pope.

    Up to 9 members! Great!

Views on SSPX: I was introduced to SSPX through my housemate in law school who was raised attending their chapels. At the time I was attending the *ahem* slightly charismatic diocesan Mass.

Meanwhile, my classmates and I were busy compiling all this research to "prove" that she was schismatic, and that's how most of my knowledge formed about the society. It wasn't until after Summorum Pontificum was released that I braved attending Mass there. I was in Rome at the time and somehow it wasn't as bit of an issue as I had thought it would be.

Now I either attend SSPX, diocesan TLM or diocesan OF, depending on what week it is. My big obstacle was not confusing the crazier members who sometimes attend the chapels with the SSPX as a group. The Priest was great and tried to stifle the sedevecantist members, but they still pop in from time to time, which is a shame.

    How about everyone else?

    Hello everybody,

What are your views on the SSPX?

I'm going to look into joining the Latin Mass Society. I think you made a good point when you said that membership in the LMS sends a message to our Bishops. I feel I should give my support because I would really miss the EF if it ever became unavailable to me.

Thanks! Sorry about the delay in response. I think the suggestion to use Sacrosantum Concilium is a good one, though given the recent statements by the Pope, I think it is becoming clear to many that the Pope wants people to know that the TLM should hold an equal place to the OF today, which is good.

I've been wondering the same about the Latin Mass Society. I've used their website resources frequently so it seems like membership could be a beneficial resource. Also, according to the website, it may help with the overall promulgation of the TLM locally:

    From the website:

What do we all get out of it?

The point is, we need members to help us for two important reasons:

    · The more members we have, the stronger the message we send that the Catholics of England and Wales want the traditional liturgy restored to the altars of our churches.

    · We undertake a lot of work, and plan to do more, to promote the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass both at national and local level. Some of the ways in which we spend our money are listedhere Your subscription helps to fund this work and ensure that the old rite is celebrated more and more frequently.

I hope you will feel able to join us. Wh
ether you do or not, please pray for the success of the Society’s work.

It sounds like something that might be good if you've got an extra £10 or £20 laying around and it would go towards a good cause. Perhaps there is someone here who is a member and can enlighten us about it?

I was wondering if anyone here is a member of the Latin Mass Society? Would you recommend joining?

The video you posted is perfect for your purposes. It shows a beautiful high altar with sanctuary and altar rail. You can use this video to highlight your points about Ad Orientem worship, altar rails, high altars, gregorian chant etc. I think this will provide an excellent introduction to the EF Mass.

Also, have you thought about providing some quotations from the Vatican II document on the liturgy, Sacrosantum Concilium? I have a feeling that some in the audience will claim that Vatican II did away with the EF Mass, and that the OF Mass was what the Council mandated. Before they ask these questions, you could provide quotations from the aforementioned document to show that Vatican II stressed the importance of latin in the liturgy, as well as Gregorian Chant. It would be excellent if you could defend the EF Mass using the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy.
Prove to the people that the EF Mass is not anti-Vatican II. (In fact, it is my personal opinion that the OF Mass was a stark departure from what the Council Fathers mandated, but that is for a different discussion on another day.)
