The Sweet Life — Catholics and Diabetes

Visit the forum of this group.
Group created by John Lazarus

A group for diabetics and families of diabetics. We will discuss strategies for dealing with diabetes, food restrictions, Lenten fasts and Friday abstinence, taking needles, and offering it all up.

So come into the kitchen, pop a diet soda, and let's talk.

I have been on Pump for over 20 years. A little misinformation in your post. The infusion set needs to be changed every 2 or 3 days. It is definitely worth the costs. In canada I think that you are covered for supplies with your wonderful free health cxare (which i hope never will be imitated by the yankees)

Also you might consider a Continuous Glucose Monitor which is a great tool to help achieve better Glucose control. Best of luck with your decision.

    Dear fellow diabetics,
I need help for a young type one diabetic 35 years old. She had heart bypass surgery on Saturday (4 vessel). Three of the grafts failed yesterday. She might not survive.

I *loathe* diet sodas. I don't know if it's the aspartame or the sucralose, but there is a certain "wrongness" to the sweet taste. Sure, it's sweet, but my taste buds reject it -- it's the wrong kind of sweet. I can often smell it (like in diet Pepsi -- brrr!) but most often it's the taste, Coke Zero's claim to taste "just like Coke" notwithstanding. I thought it might be mental/psychosomatic, but I have drunk sodas I had *no idea* were diet, until I got "that taste".

So, as a diabetic, I am now looking for alternatives to either sugary sodas -- which I can't have -- and diet ones -- which I won't.

Starting out, I really couldn't deal with club soda/sparkling mineral water, the only non-sweetened fizzy drink out there -- it reminded me too much of Alka Seltzer. So I had a little brainstorm: steep a flavoured herbal teabag in the club soda.

I have tried cranberry, lemon, orange, pomegranate, and raspberry. I must say, it's not bad -- you get at least a bit of fruity flavour and aroma, but no sugaryness, artificial or otherwise. You might need to practise a bit to get the steeping just right -- I found it could get quite unpalatable if left too long.

My wife brought the idea to her Weight Watcher's meeting, and it really took off; the group leader gave her a "Bravo!" sticker to give to me.
    Hi John!
I love my diet orange, so I am lucky. I try to drink lots of water also. Have you tried Iced Tea? They make it in a can with lemon and sweetner. I like it. I have been on a Tilapia kick lateley, with melted smart balance and garlic powder on top...yummy. God bless! Bob.

    @James:

The simple answer for weight loss is to ensure that your calorie burning is greater than your calorie consumption.

Cut back on calories from fat -- if you're going to consume calories, it's better to get them from the other nutrient groups, preferably vegetables. Proteins are OK, but too much protein can affect your kidneys; and we know what happens to diabetics with too much carbs.

Increasing your fibre can help. Fibre is considered a "free" carb; so a food which has 19g of carbs, of which 4g is fibre, has really only 15g of available carbs.

Any exercise is better than no exercise. Move what you can, when you can. You don't need to be a runner; walking is good (I am of the opinion that walking is one of the best forms of exercise). If your back or legs bug you too much to walk, move your arms; the gym where I do physio has a bicycle-pedal thingy where you use your arms instead of legs.

One of my exercises that I do is looping a Theraband (a strip of rubber for exercising) over the crossbar of my walker. I hook my heel into the loop of the rubber so that my leg is extended, like in a sling. I then flex my leg back and then re-extend, sloooowly. Strengthens my leg muscles, which then makes it a bit easier to do things like walk (still can't climb stairs, yet).

That's all I have at the moment...anyone else?

    Hi, Joe.

Yeah, the weird thing about diabetes is that it doesn't just hit the fat and lazy. As I understand it, there is a genetic component, and your body's inability to properly process sugar -- not necessarily that your "pancreas wore out".

Yeah, definitely, let's have a few laughs. There are days that we'll really need them.

Hello felow diabetics. So glad to be a part of this group as we may be able to help each other stay on track with our diets, blood sugars, weight issues, and may even have some laughs while doing so.

    wonderful picture sidhe54, beautiful.

I've been diabetic someodd 15 years now. I struggle with my weight. When i'm loseing weight and trying to exercise, my sugars are in normal range and i've even been able to stop using insulin. BUT, for some reason the weight loss stops and I start gaining again and my sugars go up.
I have problems with my back, feet and hips so it's really hard to stay on an exercise regement. Any one have any advice on diet without exercise? : )

    Hi Mary !!!!!

Pretty much a constant struggle managing the numbers.
I have always been tall and slender, never saw this coming.

    Welcome, James.

Yeah, diabetes is unfortunate. It's also a very sneaky disease: causes all kinds of problems if you are not scrupulously careful about your sugars.

In my case, though, my diabetes is better than the alternative: death. I was brought to the hospital with a BG of 55.8 (that's 1005.4 for Americans...I kid you not). So I consider (or try to, anyway) my diabetes to be a sort of blessing in disguise -- a really good disguise, mind.

    Welcome, Jen.

I see you're from the Philippines. I tell you, one of the things I regret about being diabetic is not being able to guzzle a humongous halo-halo on a hot summer day...

    Welcome, Maggie!

I think I am in the same boat as you -- very hard to keep my BG in the normal range (spikes and crashes).

I hope with this group we can share strategies for making our blood -- and lives -- as "normal" as possible.

    John
