"Maryland My Maryland" was penned by a Confederate sympathizer, and refers to Lincoln as a 'despot'. It also refers to northerners as 'scum'. Not pretty.

That being said, the only verse that gets sung these days (usually at the Preakness) mentions "Carroll's sacred trust".

Of course, the Carroll mentioned is Charles Carroll of Carrolton, the only Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence, and whose cousin, John, was the first American archbishop, and the founder of Georgetown University. Another Carroll was Daniel, one of two Catholics to sign the Constitution.

At its founding and for some time after, the Archdiocese of Baltimore was the entire United States!

I am originally from Maryland, though I curently live in the Detroit, Michigan area. I was back there this past August, and had the opportunity to attend Sunday Mass at the Basilica in Baltimore. What a beautiful church!

Hello, all ye Marylanders! Hold high the bannder of Lord Baltimore and sing a rousing chorus of "Maryland, my Maryland!" I am a native of this fair state, although my parents are from New Jersey. I love it here, and I love the history that surrounds it. As a Britophile, I am proud that this state was the first English colony to allow Catholics to worship the faith in peace. I love Fr. Andrew White, Lord Baltimore, and Queen Henrietta Maria (bless 'er soul).
