Latin Learners

Group created by celephais72

For all the members of Catholic Answers who are learning Latin. :) This will hopefully grow into a cozy little place where we can help each other out with Ecclesiastical and Classical Latin studies. Anyone can join, but please, let's keep the discussion to Latin studies, only, OK? :)

The parish I go to is huge, and it's hard to hear the priest even in the front of the church, because no mics are used except for during the readings and the homily, and there's a whole lot of echo. I'd also be interested in any audio sources from these groups that can help me learn what the priest is saying. Thanks!
    Hey Josh,
I hope you had a great Christmas! I got stuck here due to the ice/snow, but made it on Sunday and didn't see you there.
Anyway, check out this site, I went to this parish while in California and was very impressed (even though the parish is more modern). All of their Masses at this parish are High Masses and sung! Here's their audio section to learn Latin-

This is a link to some Latin helps, grammar pages, exercises and such that might be useful to some of us that already know some Latin.

    Enjoy!

The typical translation is "Seize the day" -- "Make the most of your day" is as good as any. Don't squander opportunity.

Carpe diem, what's the meaning? Make the most of your day? Please say something, don't be dead! Answer my question, as soon as you can.

Hi, my name is Italia I am italian and I live in UK I have learned Latin in the school long time ago and also I have been to latin mass many times when I was a child I am attracted to Latin I don't know why. Have you heard about lectio divina? What is all about? is it some form of mysticism? What is for you? When I read a passage in the bible and meditate ? I would be interested to know twhat is all about. Please.

the grammatical structure of a sentence may not have one right answer but it definitely can have a wrong answer. one clause can't be both a purpose clause and a result clause, this is where context becomes the deciding factor.

Oh, Tee, yep, I have the key to the Collins text. Is there a key to the Scanlon text?

I've found a good prayer book for us Latin learners - Handbook of Prayers by James Socias. It has lots of prayers, both modern and traditional in English and Latin! I highly reccomend it!

PS: In case you are not aware, there is also an Answer Key for Collins's Ecclesiastical Latin, published by CUA (though there is rarely a singular "right" answer to the translation of any substantial phrase). Anyone working through that text on their own my find it helpful.

Thanks, tee, for the insight into the books I'm using! I needed that! I gathered from my glance through the Scanlon & Scanlon book that it would be an effort to plow through!
