Saving Sacred Music

Group created by Dougieb88

Are you thrilled by Tallis? Does Palestrina peak your interest? Then this is the place for you! I'm starting this group for those interested in encouraging sacred music to be heard once again in Catholic churches everywhere. Won't you join me? :)

Of course, there is beauty and majesty in later religious music as well, if only to mention FRANZ SCHUBERT's Mass in E flat Major, D950

More inspired music for prayer and contemplation.

    Gregorian chant - Tibi Laus

Have the courage to ask for this type of music in your church. It soothes the soul.

    Hey,
Where is everyone? I just joined the group and see that no one has been here since last year? Sacred music is dear to my heart.
Come back. everyone! Let/s exchange ideas on how to bring this music back into church services.

Hi there. Is this group still active? I am new to the group. I am a returning RC. I left just after Vatican II. Spent 10 yrs in born-again praise & worship churches, followed by over 20 yrs in the Episcopal Church. My Episcopal parish was high-church, conservative, orthodox Anglican Catholic - no women priests. What I miss most is the music, directed by an exceptional choirmaster who loved Bach, Vivaldi, Tallis & Handel. My RC parish probably has one of the best "traditional" music directors in the diocese, yet she still ends up sprinkling in a few tunes from the likes of Haugen and Haas (Oregon Press). We have a cantor who does a great job singing solo versions of Shubert's Ave Maria or Panis Angelicus. The pastor has "trained" everyone to refrain from clapping after she sings, to preserve the solemnity of the Mass. Still I miss singing plainsong chant during Advent & Lent, Christus Vincit at Easter and the Hallelujah Chorus at the Feast of Christ the King. I long to see the effect that sacred music would have on restoring reverence and solemnity to the Holy Mass. Does anyone know of a grass-roots effort to promote sacred music in the Catholic Dioceses in the US? I would like to join forces and play a small part of making this a reality.
