    1. What is the rite/ Act of contrition? I was once told to do that for my penance. I thought I knew what it was only to get confused later.

    2. I heard once that one should not go for confession just because he or she fears the wrath of God (going to hell) but rather one should go because he or she is sorry for offending God who is all good and deserving of all our love.
My question is: Is it then okay to go for confession because you just cannot stand being away and separated from God?(As in the case where one commits a mortal sin) Is that the same thing as going because you fear God's punishment?

The one day our parish priest told me that to be able to truly forgive, I have to pray for this people. I thought at first that this is very difficult to do but I had to try.

And I was amazed to find out that it is difficult but not impossible and the result is the peace that that you feel within you.

I then realized what confession can do to your life. Now, I am not only praying for people who hurt me but I even offer my masses for them and I can feel within myself the tremendous this brings.

I thank God for the sacrament of reconciliation because it really made me a better person than what I used to be.

How wonderful God's love is for giving us all the opportunity to be closer to Him.

    God Bless

What a beautiful post! I, too, learned about forgiveness over a period of time. I found that when I prayed for people who hurt me, I could not remain angry with them. My anger doesn't hurt them--it poisons me. Thanks again for a great post.

I came into the Catholic Church in 2004, a convert from Protestant Fundamentalism. My first confession was very scary: I was 49 and had quite a laundry list of sins, some quite serious, to confess. The priest was very kind to me.

In my former faith, we were told to just ask Jesus to forgive us. I never had assurance that I had prayed with the right repentance, especially since I seemed to keep doing the same things over and over. My biggest human failing was my temper. It terrified my children and disgusted my husband for years upon years. I started going to Confession on a regular basis, I found a priest who really connected with me, and he became my Confessor. Every time I lost my temper I would tell him about it. He asked the circumstances behind it, and really was able to allow me to see things differently. He gave me ideas to use in volatile situations. I started losing my temper less and less often. After a few years of this ongoing frequency of going to Confession and applying what was suggested, I suddenly realized that I had gotten to the point where I rarely lost my temper.

Without a kind, gentle, and wise priest whom God brought into my life at just the right time, I don't know if I'd ever have had victory over my temper. I was a challenge to the priest, believe me, but he kept insisting that the grace of God could work in me if I cooperated with that grace. And, I finally got victory over a life long issue with anger.

Confession is not just a place to be forgiven, although that is crucial,. Confession is a place where Jesus meets with you in the confessional, guiding the priest as he listens to you and counsels you. I am not afraid of Confession anymore. I run to it when I need that Sacrament which tells me I am absolved, and the grace I receive will help me to do better. Sorry if this is very long.

He says unless we confess our sins and ask for pardon our mortal sins will not be forgiven. The modern pop culture with all its avenues of instant gratification tells us Mortal sins do not exist. For that matter sin on a whole is of no significance to the surging pop culture which is present today! Yes deep down in the soul of the humanity, he/she knows that there is more to life than what meets the eye; there is more to happiness than what the seemingly pop culture offers. This little voice inside, is the voice of God that calls you back to him, calls you back to change and repentance. So many times you may have heard that call and hardened your hearts and refused. Yet the love of God is constantly flowing into your hearts and minds. God in his abundance of love is patient. Use His patience as an opportunity to be saved in Christ! 2Pet. 5-7. ......for he does not want anyone to be lost. Every day he cleans and shines your seat next to him, and he says, "this seat belongs to you." He calls you by name, and beckons you to return to his infinite love. He waits in great expectation to release this infinite love unto you. Today is the day of repentance! You can wait no more or prolong that encounter of love with Jesus himself. Go and be washed by the blood of the lamb; go and be cleansed of all your sins; go and be liberated of this unbearable weight that you have been carrying around your lives for sooo long! Let us go and take this spiritual bath. The Sacrament of Confession is the way, the call to liberation and true internal peace and joy! Why delay won't you take that step: And yes it is ok to be nervous and afraid!! God's embracing infinite love is more powerful!
    Well said and so true.

There are people out there paying thousands for dollars for shrinks
For what we are freely given.. and we get one better that no shrink can do and that is absolution from sin A gift directly from the Hands of God through the priest...
all people have to do is go to confession.... no matter wether or not we cause hurt to others or if we were hurt ourselves..
I just wish I didnt have a need to go so often. lol

Yes, it is still relevant. I just wished that priests would talk about the need to go, and how to approach it, etc from the pulpit as its been a long time since I've heard any mentions from any priest during a homily.

The parish I've been going to a bit more lately, the priest did talk about Confession some during Lent and even offered more time to receive beyond the 2 Saturdays a month the parish offers to go to Confession.

Hello all! Just dropping in to say my prayers going out to all in this group.

Father Viny Hello! I went to Google and looked up the parish where you are and saw there the pictures of the celebration of the canonizaton of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha and saw where she is entombed. I also saw a picture! of you!

Are you going to D.C. to the Mass of Thanksgiving at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in honor of St. Kateri Tekakwitha?

I went to confession a couple weeks ago. Still aglow with the peace of the Sacrament!

Saint Kateri Tekakwitha pray for us to always do the Heavenly Father's Will!

Thank you Marla Frances. Helped a lot. We have confession at my church every Saturday morning. I have felt I should go but figured I'd sound stupid. I know anger is a sin and I've been getting angry a lot at my cat, maybe if I go to confession God will give me the patience I have been praying for.

God bless you and thanks for replying.

baptismal I read you post again and I forgot to mention that yes all venial sin is forgiven during the penitential rite at Mass. There are many different versions but still we are forgiven of only venial not mortal sin. Sacramental confession is the only means of forgiveness after Baptism of Mortal Sin.

Bad thoughts are not a sin as long as they just come and we quickly try to rid our mind of them. This would be temptation. I say Jesus help me or turn to the Blessed Virgin for help. If we deliberately think impure thoughts for awhile that is sinful. When you said bad I assumed that is what you meant. If you are shy perhaps go behind the screen and this may help you. But just remember~~~the priest is speaking and acting and granting forgiveness in the place of Jesus Christ. So never fear Jesus is with you in the confessional.
Father Vincent will have to read this though and see if he agrees. He has been visiting this group again but is a very busy man of God. May God bless and protect and reward him always.

    God bless you!

baptismal No, if you don't have mortal sin you don't have to go to confession. But the church recommends that you go often even if you bring only venial sin. This helps me keep on track. God gives you His mercy and forgiveness in this beautiful sacrament and this will help you avoid sin in the future. I try to go once a month---even if to just be reconciled to God even though I have no serious sin. His peace is the greatest gift of all! I know the church used to recommend we confess at least once a year during the Easter season. I am not sure if this is still a requirement. Perhaps Father Vincent could help with this as he is the expert. Hope I helped you in some way. May God Bless You and give you His peace!

Hello, if we do not commit mortal sins do we still need to go to confession? Every Sunday we say the Confiteor, is this not enough? I am very shy and going to Confession is difficult If I have a bad thought I tell God I am sorry right away. Thank you for your help.

Father Viny So good to see you back with us again. Welcome back! What an awesome experience you have had since we heard from you! I am glad that you and the pilgrims were safe in your travels to Rome. What an inspiring experience that must have been for all of you!! Thank-you for remembering us in prayer while there. I know I speak for everyone when I say that we are glad to have you back with us. I have a very good friend who chose Kateri Tekakwitha for her Patron when she was confirmed. Now I know she must be happy to know she is finally canonized. I will have to tell her that I know ~~~~invisibly~~~the priest of the parish where she is buried. May God always bless and protect you as you carry on this marvelous and wonderful work!

My humble apologies for my apparent absence from our group. I am encouraged to see this group alive. The interaction, support and encouragement among members is very rewarding as it helps us to build our Faith.

I have been quite busy with the preparation for the Canonuisation of Kateri Tekakwitha who was canonised on October 21st. I am the pastor in her Church where she is buried in Kahnawake - Quebec. The organisation and planning for this great day was such a blessing. Secondly, I was one of the priests who accomapnied the Mohawk pilgrims to Rome for the Canonization. Upon my return I had to get ready for the Advent and the Christmas celebrations.

I prayed for all of you while in Rome at the canonization ceremony. To be among the 80, 000 plus pilgrims from all over the world present at the ceremony was remarkable and a powerful historical moment of faith. Seven Saints were canonized on that day. I am humbled and fortified to continue to work among the inidigenous peoples - the Mohawk in Quebec.

May the Lord fill you with his blessings and his peace, as we experience the NEW YEAR of 2013. Be asured of my continued prayers for all of you, and may Saint Kateri Tekakwith intercede for you near to the heart of Jesus Christ.

    Fr. Vincent FMI
