1 . What is the rite/ Act of contrition? I was once told to do that for my penance. I thought I knew what it was only to get confused later.
2. I heard once that one should not go for confession just because he or she fears the wrath of God (going to hell) but rather one should go because he or she is sorry for offending God who is all good and deserving of all our love.
My question is: Is it then okay to go for confession because you just cannot stand being away and separated from God?(As in the case where one commits a mortal sin) Is that the same thing as going because you fear God's punishment?

I had that experience so many times and everytime, I have to go to confession to ask God's forgiveness for what I feel towards people that I believe have done me wrong. The one day our parish priest told me that to be able to truly forgive, I have to pray for this people. I thought at first that this is very difficult to do but I had to try.
And I was amazed to find out that it is difficult but not impossible and the result is the peace that that you feel within you.
I then realized what confession can do to your life. Now, I am not only praying for people who hurt me but I even offer my masses for them and I can feel within myself the tremendous this brings.
I thank God for the sacrament of reconciliation because it really made me a better person than what I used to be.
How wonderful God's love is for giving us all the opportunity to be closer to Him.
God Bless

What a beautiful post! I, too, learned about forgiveness over a period of time. I found that when I prayed for people who hurt me, I could not remain angry with them. My anger doesn't hurt them--it poisons me. Thanks again for a great post.

I came into the Catholic Church in 2004, a convert from Protestant Fundamentalism. My first confession was very scary: I was 49 and had quite a laundry list of sins, some quite serious, to confess. The priest was very kind to me.
In my former faith, we were told to just ask Jesus to forgive us. I never had assurance that I had prayed with the right repentance, especially since I seemed to keep doing the same things over and over. My biggest human failing was my temper. It terrified my children and disgusted my husband for years upon years. I started going to Confession on a regular basis, I found a priest who really connected with me, and he became my Confessor. Every time I lost my temper I would tell him about it. He asked the circumstances behind it, and really was able to allow me to see things differently. He gave me ideas to use in volatile situations. I started losing my temper less and less often. After a few years of this ongoing frequency of going to Confession and applying what was suggested, I suddenly realized that I had gotten to the point where I rarely lost my temper.
Without a kind, gentle, and wise priest whom God brought into my life at just the right time, I don't know if I'd ever have had victory over my temper. I was a challenge to the priest, believe me, but he kept insisting that the grace of God could work in me if I cooperated with that grace. And, I finally got victory over a life long issue with anger.
Confession is not just a place to be forgiven, although that is crucial,. Confession is a place where Jesus meets with you in the confessional, guiding the priest as he listens to you and counsels you. I am not afraid of Confession anymore. I run to it when I need that Sacrament which tells me I am absolved, and the grace I receive will help me to do better. Sorry if this is very long.

What is really important to Jesus, is to return to the God of our Fathers, return to the Divine Trinity, through Jesus Christ our Lord! He says unless we confess our sins and ask for pardon our mortal sins will not be forgiven. The modern pop culture with all its avenues of instant gratification tells us Mortal sins do not exist. For that matter sin on a whole is of no significance to the surging pop culture which is present today! Yes deep down in the soul of the humanity, he/she knows that there is more to life than what meets the eye; there is more to happiness than what the seemingly pop culture offers. This little voice inside, is the voice of God that calls you back to him, calls you back to change and repentance. So many times you may have heard that call and hardened your hearts and refused. Yet the love of God is constantly flowing into your hearts and minds. God in his abundance of love is patient. Use His patience as an opportunity to be saved in Christ! 2Pet. 5-7. ......for he does not want anyone to be lost. Every day he cleans and shines your seat next to him, and he says, "this seat belongs to you." He calls you by name, and beckons you to return to his infinite love. He waits in great expectation to release this infinite love unto you. Today is the day of repentance! You can wait no more or prolong that encounter of love with Jesus himself. Go and be washed by the blood of the lamb; go and be cleansed of all your sins; go and be liberated of this unbearable weight that you have been carrying around your lives for sooo long! Let us go and take this spiritual bath. The Sacrament of Confession is the way, the call to liberation and true internal peace and joy! Why delay won't you take that step: And yes it is ok to be nervous and afraid!! God's embracing infinite love is more powerful!

i love confession and Thank God for it!
There are people out there paying thousands for dollars for shrinks
For what we are freely given.. and we get one better that no shrink can do and that is absolution from sin A gift directly from the Hands of God through the priest...
all people have to do is go to confession.... no matter wether or not we cause hurt to others or if we were hurt ourselves..

Yes, it is still relevant. I just wished that priests would talk about the need to go, and how to approach it, etc from the pulpit as its been a long time since I've heard any mentions from any priest during a homily.
The parish I've been going to a bit more lately, the priest did talk about Confession some during Lent and even offered more time to receive beyond the 2 Saturdays a month the parish offers to go to Confession.
