Matthew's Gospel Study Group

Visit the forum of this group.
Group created by smithm29

This group will study Matthew's gospel using the questions from the Ignatius Study Bible by Scott Hahn, Curtis Mitch, and Dennis Walters. Extra information will be provided from the Navarre Bible, Sacra Pagina, and other sources as they become available.

We should be able to move pretty slowly (no more than a chapter a week) and take as much time as we need to really dig into each chapter of Saint Dominic's favorite gospel.

    In sensus plenior:

The law of blasphemy ... i.e. making the name of the Lord common, was fulfilled in Christ in the day that no man teaches another because all will know him. His name is common.

The law of adultery is fulfilled when Christ marries a prostitute, (the church) but makes her a virgin bride.

The law of murder is fulfilled when Christ lays down his own life for us. This is foreshadowed by Cain killing Abel, and many others.

In each of these he 'commits the sin' if you look at it in riddle, but is not culpable or guilty of sin because he did not sin in doing it.

For the group - I also have a book - "Understanding the Scriptures - A Complete Bible Study, A Didache Series" Unfortunately it is out of print but I found one on eBay for a reasonable amount. It has Nihil obstat and Imprinatur (official Church declarations that a book is free of doctrinal and moral error)

It has a fair amount of interesting info - bits and pieces that are put into one book.

It mentions that of all the Gospel writers, Matthew is the one who most lets Jesus speak for himself. ( 3 Chapters of the Sermon on the Mount are simply a reporting of Christ's words.)
Ah, I forgot about that one. It's out of print? Rats!

I hope you enjoy Tim Gray's series. Oh, and I almost forgot, Scott Hahn's site has a 6 lesson study on Matthew. I'll find it tonight and set a link for it. I can't believe I forgot that one.

    About teaching at the synagogue.
Jesus was for the most part not in Jerusalem, . Are we saying that even those times when He did travel to Jerusalem, he taught at the synagogues more than He taught at the Temple ?
From what I recall, it seems he taught in the Temple the last week (After Palm Sunday), but I can't recall other times.

Oh yeah, "If anyone is Thirsty, let him come to me...." was said in the Temple worship during the Festival of Lights.

Following Saint Gregory's moral interpretation of the Magi's three gifts, how has your behavior reflected wisdom, worship, and sacrifice?
    I didn't know that's what he said....
In sensus plenior the gold represents the Word of Father, the frankincense represents the sweet savor of the burnt offering and total devotion of the Son. The myrrh is an oil and represents the Life of the Holy Spirit.

For application it is a trusting in the Word, Works and Life of God that enables me to put off the flesh in faith and be obedient in the face of ridicule, hopefully persecution and even death.

So I am far from the complete practice of it, but some folks claim I have a gift of martyrdom and wish that I would practice it soon.

    In the sensus plenior:

5 is the number of man
10 is the number of the dual natured man Christ Jesus. It also sometimes represents the church when it has become 'like him'.

Female represents not seeing clearly. It has nothing to do with gender. It is because the woman was deceived. So a female donkey represents a prophet that doesn't see clearly.

A female 5 represents the bride who is not yet dual natured and does not see clearly.

Hence it is 'code' for that while we were yet sinners Christ died for or 'married' us. Since there is no marriage in heaven, the marriage of the Lamb took place at the cross.

I can't find it now, but someone asked about the significance of 14 generations in blocks.

    In sensus plenior:

3 - Trinity as revealed in word, works and life.
    7 - fullness of God's testimony
2 - in heaven and on earth.

The first 14 represent the fullness of the Father's testimony in heaven and on earth as he speaks the Word and chooses his bride. We have promises made that they did not see, except by faith.

The second 14 represent the works of the Son as he Works for his bride and calls or woos her. This is the time that the bride is rebellious. She "would not". In this block you have the wooing of the Song of Solomon. Also the repeated measuring of kings and their works.

The third 14 represent the life that would be provided by the Spirit had the bride responded in love. Because of her rebelliousness, this portion is noteworthy for God's silence. There is no life.

Christ is included in the third set because in the flesh he was made desolate. He had no fruit until after the cross.

I eager to find out the answer.
The person answering quoted St.Augustine referring to John 19:34 where Christ's side was pierced and water and blood gushed out.
That to me does not quite address the question .
    Anyone?
In sensus plenior, water is the word. Jesus is the living Word, and hence the Living Water. When you are "in Christ" you have been baptized in the Living Water.

Literal baptism is just a type of this, hence Jesus did not baptize using the type, but himself.

I had no idea she lived for that long, whenever I think of her, it is as a young woman.
"John was presumably close to Mary as well" would be an understatement. You'll see that John took Mary into his home. If Mary lived at John's home in Ephasus for 23 more years, then yes, it is not presumptuous to think that Mary "might" have talked about the boy Jesus.

Yes, Christian tradition says that Mary lived til the age of 72 before she was assumed into heaven. If Mary was indeed 16 years old when Jesus was born (I think the best guesses are 13 - 16 years of age), then you are looking at 23 - 24 more years for Mary.

Village Gossip? What, Mary didn't tell Joseph immediately? And after telling him that the child was to be the Son of God, neither Mary nor Joseph had a clue what his role would be. But Joseph did know one thing. If people asked Mary if Joseph was the father, she would be obligated to say, "NO". This would put her life in peril if there were any religious purist around.

Joseph was wise, in my opinion (which all of my ranting represents..... nothing more than my opinion).

But yes, the infancy narratives do point us to His death, but it seems likes it's only after we understand the whole story. The myrrh is indeed used for burial. The holy innocents pre-figure the numerous Christians who would suffer for their faith. Simeon seems to point to the "Great-Divide" that Jesus would cause among Jews and even speaks of Mary's coming misery. And Jesus' 3 days in the Temple pre-figure His time in the tomb.

I guess its just easy to skim past this part and hurry on to Jesus' Public Ministry.
    Amazing isn't it , how the bible is networked;
Jesus's three days in the temple and His three days in the tomb; that one had not clicked for me.
Another pointer to the divine inspiration of the Bible.

Questions for chapter two are up. One of them is an essay, so if you want to write a bit and read about the historicity of Matthew's gospel, give it a shot! I might try to write a short (five paragraph) essay on one of the reasons given for the historical trustworthiness later on during the week.
