    I'm thinking maybe Bernard Malamud.
Flannery O'Connor thought highly of his work.
He publish 65 short stories, now if I could only find out if any of them were this one

Hey, does anyone remember a short story by a famous Jewish writer in New York, about an old man who took care of his retarded son who is incapable of taking care of himself, after he discovers he's being pursued by Death?
The story takes place during a freezing winter storm. He wants to put his son on a train to Los Angeles where the old man's sister lives, hoping she can take take care of boy but he doesn't have money for the ticket, It's snowing and he's out hustling, trying to pawn what little he has and in eventually ends up begging at his rabbi's door. His rabbi gives him his new, expensive coat (over the objections of the rabbi's wife) and the man gets quite a bit of money for it.
The last thing he has to pawn is his watch (because he needs to know what time the train leaves) so he goes to a pawn shop and the clerk is Death, so they run out into the snow and finally pawn the watch at another shop, so they go to the train station with the boy's belongings in a cardboard box. When he gets to the ticket window the clerk is....Death. Death begrudgingly permits him to put his boy on the train to Los Angeles.
It's a great story---very deep--- and I'd like to find it and reread it again but darn, I can't recollect the author's name or the title.

I literally wrote 5000 words of chararacter-developing exercizes last night... And 500 words on my essay for school.

I do not think I am good at prioritizing.

Grand theft auto and Chesterton? Now that's an interesting combination. Congratulations!

    Yahoo!
The One-Way Trip, a short (but dark) fiction is in the March-April 2013 issue of Gilbert, the journal of The American Chesterton Society!
Three blunt force trauma homicides and a grand theft auto, so be warned.
The best celebration of all will come in a few hours when I have my hour at Adoration

    Interesting suggestions, thanks to everyone!

The photo album sounds like a good idea; I saw a similar idea (with a single photo) being executed very well in a game I played recently. All the best!
