Group created by andrew60

Look to start thoughts and ideas on and about scripture
Lets start by what does oit mean in the book of Hebrews when it says the Word is like a two edged sword. Is the Word written or is it spoken?

So tell us more about why you like those specific scriptures. I like John 1 and Genesis 1 because of the similarities in them

I was raised in a Fundamentalist household where the Bible was considered the only revealed truth of God. So, yes, I studied the Bible for years and years. My favorite passages include the entire second chapter of the Epistle to the Colossians, the 15th chapter in St Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians, Psalms 1 and 91. The Catholic Church has a lovely hymn based on Psalm 91, called "On Eagle's Wings". Actually, a lot of the hymns in the Church are based on Scripture. I love it!

Hi, I'm new but want to jump right in. Heb4:12 is a favorite of mine. I liked what sheila0405 had to say. It is through the discernment of the Holy Spirit, "dividing soul and spirit," that I get my convictions. There have been many thoughts and behaviors throughout my life that I once saw no problem with that I now see as sin. For example, patriotism and politics. The soul lives in the physical realm. "Dividing soul and spirit" helps me to be freed of worldliness, clearly discerning what is of earth and of heaven. This is sanctification, "dying to self" to be of greater service to God and others. Made Holy or "separated out."

I like your explanation Sheila. Lots of thought into it. So have you studied scripture for very long? I have been trying to discern it for over thirty years but some gets retained and some dont. Do you have any special scripture versus you like? Thanks for your input one and all. Lets make this an awesome forum so we all can learn the Lords word!

I was a Protestant Fundamentalist prior to my conversion to Catholicism in 2004. The meaning of Hebrews 4:12 taught to me was this: God's Word is written by the Holy Spirit, who reaches out to the heart and soul of man when the Bible is read. The truths of God are made clear to the one who reads it, and thus the Holy Spirit can use the Word of God to convict mankind of sin and the need for salvation. It is in God's Word that we learn the truth about God and the necessity and means of salvation. The human heart is revealed, and the end result ought to be cooperation with the Holy Spirit by repentance of sin and trusting in Christ. I don't think this contradicts Catholicism: the Scriptures, especially the Gospels, lay the groundwork for the Mass. During the Liturgy of the Word, we feed on the Eternal Word, the Logos of God, that is, Jesus. Then, in the Liturgy of the Eucharist we feed on Christ's Body and Blood so that He can give us the graces we need to live out His Word. Hope this helps.
