Ender, you and I are on the same side vis--vis capital punishment, but you present our shared position much better than I can. Well done.

You seem very focussed on capital punishment.

I'm really enjoying your line of reasoning on Catholic Academics Challenging Boehner

Ender, every time I see you come to the defense of capital punishment, I'm impressed. Thanks for doing what you do.

I am very interested. Perhaps you read in (I believe) "This Rock" magazine a few years ago, a priest's explanation on why the Death Penalty can be very just and and even merciful, based on how often those sentenced are moved to convert knowing 'the end is near'? I am not even paraphrasing, just my recollection of the gist of it. I have gone through all my old copies of 'This Rock' and have been unable to find it. I remembering it being such an amazing article and I would love to get my hands on it again.

I have very much enjoyed your postings regarding the Church's teachings on Capital Punishment. Thank you for the education. I have worked for a proscuting attorney for several years and have sometimes felt that I needed to justify to my fellow parishioners when the DA has sought the DP. I have so tired of hearing how the DP and abortion are on equal 'pro-life' terms!! Thanks again!

Thanks Ender for adding me as a friend - I really enjoy our opportunities to share on the forums!
For me - it is not a contradiction but a developing understanding that makes 2267 make sense today.

    4elise -

I have never learned anything about capital punishment from my Church; in fact I haven't met anyone (except online) who really knows anything about it. I've spent a lot of time investigating it over the last several years as a result primarily of discussions like the one we're having. In order to state a position I need to be able to defend it and that can only be done by quoting from a valid Church source.

It really has nothing whatever to do with Pre- or Post Vatican II; when you start to investigate what the Church has said you will inevitably encounter examples from the 1995 years prior to Evangelium Vitae - and literally none of them support the position set forth in 2267.

Hi Ender - you list Catholic on your profile - but I wonder from your posts, do you attend a Traditional Catholic Church? You are obviously very well educated and familiar with Scripture and Augustin and earlier councils. We have a Traditional Catholic Church near my home, I've never attended but from what I understand they are more comfortable with the Pre Vatican II teachings. God Bless you!
