    Hi Maria!

In the Orthodox practice (I am referring to the Jesus Prayer here) one just continually repeats the same simple prayer. One could use the fingers, or nothing at all. Sometimes as a spiritual exercise (usually recommended by one's spiritual director) a prescribed number of prayers are said. I have found that this helps one internalize the message, it sometimes happens that the individual will wake up with the prayer already pouring out.

The divisions are merely a means of keeping track of the number of recitations. I find it helpful to recite something different on the larger knots, like a Doxology or PaterNoster, but you are free to develop your own chaplet if you wish. For a long time I used Franciscan penance beads because they were handy Ten in a row, then repeat! I retired them after long use.

Some ascetics and monastics of the past followed customs like bowing with each recitation, but in reality you don't have to do that, especially if you are driving!

When Carmelites are good, they are truly good.

'Brother, I am most grateful for the kindness you wished to do me. I appreciate it very highly; but, if God has given me the great sufferings I am enduring, why wish to soothe and lessen them by music? For the love of Our Lord, thank those gentlemen for the kindness they had wished to do me: I look upon it as having been done. Pay them, and send them away, for I wish to endure without any relief the gracious gifts which God sends me in order that, thanks to them, I may the better merit.'

Hello Sunflower15 I'm Eppe. I joined more or less at the same time as you and I am in the process of OCDS Third Order Discalced Carmelites - I do not know whether you feel the same way as I do; I feel called to OCDS spirituality and yearn for that sense of belonging to the OCDS and it gives me deep spiritual joy at the thought of becoming a OCDS - I desire so much to love God and make His Love known - will pray for you - please pray for me - God always.
