Question "Baptized with rose petals"???

Anybody ever heard of this before? I was talking to my aunt the other day and she said her granddaughter was "baptized with rose petals". I was too appalled to ask her any further questions.

I don't know if she meant that they used rose petals to pour the water or not, but it sounded by the way she put it that she meant they sprinkled rose petals over her head or something. As if that makes a Baptism. Somebody please tell me I misunderstood her. There are no churches that actually do that, are there?

I sure hope you did misunderstand. But to be on the safe side---I suggest you ask your aunt specifically how the baptism was done.
I have never seen or heard of rose pedals used in any way --till now.

Is it possible that this was a Baptist dedication and not a baptism at all? Baptists (not just Baptists but Anabaptists in general) reserve baptism for those who have reached the age of reason. They often have a "dedication" ceremony for infants.

I'm pretty sure that if it was a dedication then the Baptists involved would be just as appalled that your aunt thought it was a baptism!

Well, my best friend's mom is a maternity nurse and apparantly, they collect sea shells for a priest to use to baptise the babies that aren't going to make it. I know it's not the same thing, but maybe they used the petals to pour the water with...? I don't know. Sorry, just wanted to add my

Maybe she meant that there were petals floating in the baptismal font?

I ?
had an RCIA candidate a few years ago who said she had already been baptized, but when we investigated, we found the ceremony was this "rose petal" deal, some sect out in California, don't recall the name. needless to say she was baptized properly at the Easter Vigil. the way she described it, it happened when she was a teenager, and the congregation simply scattered rose petals over the "converts" in the context of a praise and worship music service.

While explaining the need for a valid baptism to our RCIA the Deacon started laughing and so did the other 'old timers' and he told us once that they had had a woman who had rose petals sprinkled over her head as baptism, and that obviously was not a real baptism so she had to be baptised again. The things people think up.

This is not what I wanted to hear. It just makes me so furious that people will take something so clearly laid out in the Bible (Christ's words himself) and twist them around. It makes me wonder why they even believe at all? I mean, really, what's the point? If your going to believe part of the Bible and twist around and throw out the rest?

What really makes me mad is that my uncle should know better. He was raised Catholic and as far as I know still considers himself one. I only hope he took the time to explain to his daughter that this child is NOT validly Baptized.
