St Paul Seminary Minn: Bishop Campbell
Most Rev Bishop Frederick F. Campbell is currently the Rector and Vice President of the Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul Minnesota.
He was named today as the new Bishop for Columbus Ohio.
Anyone from the Minnesota neck of the woods able to comment on his reputation? Is the seminary he runs considered orthodox or heterodox? Should we expect a faithful, orthodox Bishop, or should we expect a liberal who is willing to overlook abortion in his zeal to support a candidate?
I know absolutely nothing about this person, or the institution he currently runs, but I would like to learn what to expect. If you do not feel comfortable commenting publicly, please send me a private message.

Re: St Paul Seminary Minn: Bishop Campbell
I've heard that he is on the orthodox side and that he has done a lot to straighten out the local seminary. But I don't know specifics.

Re: St Paul Seminary Minn: Bishop Campbell
I'm from Minneapolis, and have some friends at the seminary.
Bishop Campbell is loved by the seminarians, and will really be missed. He is very orthodox, and definitely was steering the seminary in the right direction!
He's very orthodox, and very smart. Columbus is lucky to have him. Just ask the men at St. Paul Seminary: they miss him already and pray for another strong leader.
Columbus is in good hands.

Thank you, both of you, for the replies. I will be so delighted to have a faithful, orthodox Bishop as our shepherd.

Re: St Paul Seminary Minn: Bishop Campbell
I am from St. Paul. I don't know much about his theology, but he is greatly loved by the people that I know. He used to be the priest at St. Charles Borromeo in St. Anthony, MN, where my fiancee and close friend went to school, and my soon-to-be mother-in-law taught. They all speak lovingly of him. I only met him recently and he is bright, warm, and engaging. He also loves history; he was a history professor before becoming a priest. You'll love him!
We'll miss him. He was all set to officiate our wedding until the promotion was announced. My fiancee was heartbroken (temporarily)

Re: St Paul Seminary Minn: Bishop Campbell
It really doesn't seem that the Vatican is in the business of appointing liberals to be bishops these days. Occasionally, they'll move somebody up the ladder who may be a bit of a moderate, but usually that is about the worst extent of it. I don't think that we ought to worry too much, then, when these appointments occur.
