What's the Most Unsettling Movies you've ever seen?
It doesn't necessarily have to be horror movies, which I've been watching a lot of recently and which I love. I mean movies that just didn't sit well with you, that you would prefer to get the images out of your mind, but they stick with you, and continue to give you the creeps long after viewing.
These movies left me cold, and really, really wishing I'd never watched them, they were so disturbing to me...
One Hour Photo
The Good Girl
Little Children
Ghost World (though it's not quite as bad as the others I mentioned)
American Beauty

Seven with Brad Pitt. I don't know if I wish the images were out of my head but I found the whole justification behind the killer's deeds to be unsettling.

Re: What's the Most Unsettling Movies you've ever seen?
I've seen some gore fests that make these seem mild. the Saw series is a good example. I walked away from Seven saying I'm never sinning again, so I think there's some merit in that.(but guess what I did the next day)
I would even put Saw in the not totally gratuitous category since it is somewhat of an eye for an eye theme.
Silent Hill had a couple rough spots.
Now the Hellraiser series. Oopf. This might be the grandaddy
Event Horizon wins the award for most disturbing movie I enjoyed.
I'm trying to think of something I wish I never saw... I'll have to get back to you, I may have to consult the wife, she doesn't watch the gore but she might remember disturbing.
OOh just remembered.. "the House of Sand and Fog

I agree that Event Horizon was disturbing, that last scene really freaked me out. I really have no desire to revisit the film.

Schindler's List
Exorcism of Emily Rose
The first one depressed me--most movies (if not all) about the Holocaust depress me, but felt it important to see
The 2nd one--when I woke up in the middle of the night, I was worried about the time and so on for several days after seeing this one.

Re: What's the Most Unsettling Movies you've ever seen?
The Ring! I watched the Japanese version alone and after that I was scared that I'd die 1 week after watching the movie and kept thinking whether the video that I have was the original.
To be quite honest, I think I'm pretty safe because I'll try to find out about the movie as much as I can so that I won't come across anything strange or gory or scary. Besides that, usually I'll watch comedy, thriller, cartoon, action, and avoid horror and gory movie (SAW!).

Re: What's the Most Unsettling Movies you've ever seen?
The Exorcist was easily the movie that freaked me out the most and I didn't even watch the whole thing. I saw the last twenty minutes and I was ten. That was thirteen years ago and I still have no desire to ever watch it in its entirety. I remember sitting up for an entire night thinking that the devil was going to possess me.
Quills creeped me out in a number of ways and I am not easily creeped out. That's one I certainly won't ever recommend.
The House of Sand and Fog was just depressing. I've never seen an entire movie theater full of people leave a theater so thoroughly depressed.
I generally avoid horror movies since I have an overactive imagination and I enjoy being able to sleep at night, but, as a general rule, gore doesn't creep me out in the way that psychological thrillers will.
The Cell was just weird and a bit disturbing.

Re: What's the Most Unsettling Movies you've ever seen?
Oh, and a couple of other ones:
1) The first time I saw Titanic- the ending made me cry like a baby
2) Finding Neverland- The ending also made me cry.
3) Old School- Only parts of it. The TBS version was easier to watch, but still somewhat disgusting.
4) There's Something About Mary- First movie I saw with full frontal male nudity
5) End of Days
6) The first half hour of Pulp Fiction
7) The Passion of the Christ- Solely because of the scourging scene, but still loved it.
There are many others, but I don't want to dabble on for too long.

OH yes. I saw Hellraiser II on video when I was in my mid-20's, expecting to get a good chuckle out of it (I was a rather warped young woman, I guess, but most horror films made me chuckle), and I didn't sleep for the next 3 nights. I had to actually RENT a VCR (this was quite a few years ago, remember *grin*) and stay up all night, watching that wretched film over and over and over, to the point where I could quote every line of dialogue as the film played ... and only then could I actually sleep.
*shudder*
I've seen every one since, for some daft reason (most of them are pretty bad, but there have been a couple since the first two that have the power to frighten)... although the original 'message' seems to have been lost (maybe there was never a message, and I just chose to read something into it ) in most of them, there's a pretty clear idea that this is what results from the pursuit of worldly pleasure at any cost. I seem to enjoy terrifying myself to remind myself of it.
Creepy.

Disagree! I'm a major horror fan and the Saw movies were pretty mild. You must be a lightweight, haha!

Seriously? I viewed just a few minutes of one Saw film and that was more than enough for me. It was just violence and gore. Again, I don't understand why anyone would make such a movie. Even more mystifying to me is that folks actually watch those movies. I just don't get it. But, I guess I am way wrong because I think there are several of those movies out, so somebody is watching them.

People like an adrenaline rush. Movies that have horror and gore in them are more prone to stimulate our senses. Sometimes because they ARE shocking.
The problem is once a person gets used to a certain level of violence they need more and more to get the 'rush' so they seek more and more violence in their movies.
Honestly I think this is all pretty subtle and subconscious though. I doubt most people even realize this is why they enjoy that type of movie.
