Default Is there a WYD thread? If not, this is it

You coming to WYD Sydney 2008?
Think it'll be good?
Anything else you wanna say?

I am gonna be there of course, I live 20km away from it. Don't know if I'll actually be registered or not, so might not go to the talks etc. during the week though I'll try and get in to the final Mass... there is an observatory atop my uni which is right next to where the final Mass will be help, so maybe I'll be able to go there and see the Pope through a telescope (-:
I'll certainly be wandering the streets during the week though and say hi to the half a million Catholics who just turned up at our doorstep. It should be pretty good, I've never been to a WYD before.
Turns out the theme song is not as abysmal as I originally thought it'd be now that I've heard it a few times... very boring to play though! No big deal anyway, we can always sing the Detroit song if we don't like the new one.
We're getting all organized with homestay programs etc. so hopefully you'll all have a place to sleep!
Sydney is a nice place to eat too, we're extremely multicultural so you can probably have whatever you want, even what you normally eat back home.
The train system is not a complete disaster either so it shouldn't be too hard to get around.
Well anyway now it's time for y'all to have your say.

You seen the ad campaign - 'The Time of Your Eternal Life'? It's entirely tragic, in my humble unexpert opinion.

Yes, I live very close and will take as much in as possible.

My middle son will be going. He's 19 years old and this will be his first trip outside the U.S. by himself. So, he's certainly looking forward to it and of course I am a little nervous for him. Truth be told... I'm a little jealous too.

Lily - I've seen the ads on the sides of the bus shelters if that's what you mean. They don't seem so bad.
Anyway, since when does WYD need advertising? People on the other side of the world have heard about it a year before it's even on, and in Sydney the RTA's doing the advertising for us (-:

There are TV ads as well now - and I just think that slogan - 'The Time of Your Eternal Life' - is tragic, is all.

Yes I have to agree. The apparent reference to "The Time of My Life" from the film 'Dirty Dancing" made my kids ask, "are they going to say "Nobody puts Jesus in a corner!"?

And as one opponent of WYD said, "If you believe in eternal life, then to think that the highlight of your eternity is to stand on a racecourse watching an old man from a distance, that's pretty sad."

Of course we have to keep explaining to people that we are NOT having WYD to celebrate the Pope's visit; the Pope is visiting to help us celebrate WYD which would go on with or without him.

We'll be hosting pilgrims in our house. I'm hoping their faith and enthusiasm will rub off on our kids!

Our diocese is preparing for it in a special way. Not all of us can be with you in Australia, but that doesn't mean we won't be there in a spiritual way. Cardinal George will be officiating at this local celebration.

I'll be there, and I'll be coming from about as far away as possible- New York. Still having some issues with the registration process, but I've got the plane tickets and my visa so I'm all set

can't wait!

I remember that there were similar complaints about the advertising for WYD 2002 in Canada.

PS: The world premiere of "Women of Mystery, Women of Hope", a new short film portraying the lives of three religious orders in New York City, will be shown during WYD!

Please come if you can, and see this powerful new film! The time and place will be found in your WYD guide. (It will be premiered immediately before the showing of "The Passion of Joan of Arc", a silent film being presented with live accompaniment from the Sydney Orchestra! So, look for "The Passion of the Joan of Arc" on your schedule.)

The buzz in Sydney is already beginning! Did anyone else see the streets of Broadway teeming with habited nuns on Sunday? Young, young, young and all accents seemed to be American. Never seen anything like it before. They were visiting St Benedict's at Broadway to venerate the incorrupt body of Blessed Pier-Giorgio Frassait, Patron of World Youth Day. (As were we. )
