Default rules of refering to other threads

I may have not handled a situation well. I corrected a member of a thread for referring to a history of other threads directed at a person in the thread I was participating in. To my mind this didn't seem fair and it was hearsay that the other thread progressed along th e lines asserted.

I don't have the time to read the correspondence history of two (or maybe more) in other threads. Shouldn't there be a rule of sticking to what is presented in the particular thread you are participating in? I looked for a rule on this but I couldn't find one.

I am not against linking to a pertinent post but I feel this generalization of a person's actions in other threads as an ad homonym attack. It seems to me to be unfair way of discussion.

Is there rule for this?
