What was the homily about at your parish today? (12/18/11)
Just thought it would be nice for me to start somehting like this around here (if it hasn't been done already )
Today the deacon spoke this time instead of the priest. He spoke about how we are all called to be one, and how we- as children of God- should never hesitate to help each other out and approach God who is our father and even became a babe for our sake.

Re: What was the homily about at your parish today? (12/18/11)
Our priest talked about how Advent reminds us not only to prepare for the liturgical coming of Christ, but the second coming of Christ as well. He then talked about the Sacrament of Penance, and the three elements of the sacrament - contrition, confession and satisfaction. He clarified the difference between a mortal and venial sin, and talked about how to confess things that may have been intentionally or unintentionally skipped in confessions past. He talked about how people should not be afraid to confess even the worst of sins, as the priest has heard it all, and about the danger of carrying around an unconfessed mortal sin. He also said not to accept a penance that you don't think you can complete within a reasonable amount of time, as it can become a mortal sin if a penance is intentionally not done. He said don't be afraid to say that the penance cannot be done, it's not like the priest is going to say, "How dare you say that, just for that I'm upping your penance!" He said that the priest is there to help you get to heaven, and something can be worked out.

Re: What was the homily about at your parish today? (12/18/11)
I went to a Maronite Catholic church this morning for a Divine Liturgy celebrated for the repose of the soul of my late great–uncle.
For them, this Sunday is Genealogy Sunday, and the Gospel read was that which corresponds to the Gospel of the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord, at the Vigil Mass in the Roman Rite.
The priest spoke about how the generations were split for a reason. The generations from Adam to David were faithful to God. Then, the generations from David to the Babylonian Exile were not faithful to God. They were punished with the Babylonian Exile. From after the Exile to the time of Jesus, they were yet again faithful to God.
It was very nice.

Re: What was the homily about at your parish today? (12/18/11)
Our Irish priest gave a rather nice homily about his childhood Christmases, specifically the old Irish tradition of leaving candles in the window and the door open on Christmas eve. He spoke about how this symbolized a welcome to strangers, wanderers, and beggars ("beggarmen" as he calls them), based on the belief that when welcoming a stranger one might be welcoming Christ himself. He spoke about our need to have this sort of charitable openness in the "real world," but to also have a similar disposition in our hearts so we can welcome Christ as he comes on Christmas.
I think it was a very nice homily and a wonderful way to tie in some of Catholicism's beautiful traditions, emphasize the need for charity and corporal works of mercy, and teach on the proper way to prepare for Christmas during advent.

Re: What was the homily about at your parish today? (12/18/11)
He talked about how animals were domesticated and that humans try to domesticate God. We should be domesticated by God. He defined domesticate as to take into the home. He also spoke of people making plans. He said that if you want to make God laugh just tell Him your plans. He also said that Mary who had plans to marry had made plans to have children and God called her for other plans.

Re: What was the homily about at your parish today? (12/18/11)
Our priest spoke about all the evil that was in the Jewish world at that time. Pontius Pilate, Caesar, Herod, etc, in their palaces, were very powerful, nasty, evil human beings, but the voice of God spoke to John the Baptist in the desert. Prepare the way of the Lord.
(Then the sun started streaming through the beautiful, large stained glass windows on the far wall, and I was distracted. )

The Blessed Virgin's willing submission to God's Will, and how that should guide us in our relationship to God. Also how the Lord's will can, and often does, surprise us with joyous opportunities to serve.
It was an excellent homily.

The question reminds me of a story. Once a reporter asked Calvin Coolidge, as he was leaving church one Sunday, what he thought of the minister's sermon.
Coolidge replied, "It was about sin; he was against it."

Mary saying yes to God. Also talked about the Angel Gabriel through the ages. Also to not let the busyness of the week get in the way of welcoming the Christ Child. I plan to listen to the Messiah this week as I go about on errands,

We are Byzantine Catholic and had the same Gospel reading. Our priest talked about the fact that Matthew lists all sorts of people in Jesus' family tree, some good and some not-so-good, and that the point is that God loves us sinners so much that He was willing not only to die for us but to have us in His family.

We got a good one. About 7 tests for humility. In order to prepare ourselves for Christ's coming.

Same reading in the Byzantine Rite. Sunday before Christmas is the Sunday of the Holy Fathers.

Re: What was the homily about at your parish today? (12/18/11)
One of our Bishops gave todays Homily. He focussed on putting away all the secular stuff and focussing on Celebrating the coming of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Bishop Jim did a good job.
