Orthodox/Catholic Threads
Lately. every time there is a new thread on the subject of Eastern Orthodoxy it must be watched closely because it always seems fall off into uncharitable behavior. I wish our Orthodox brethren here at CAF to feel comfortable posting on the NCR forum.
Threads have been closed and infractions issued in some instances. Which is unfortunate because the threads have been very interesting subjects.
Obviously some debate guidelines must be issued to combat this problem.
These guidelines are the same as CAF's long-standing religious discussion guidelines and charity guidelines,
1. The following list is a sample of good areas to discuss under for Eastern Orthodoxy. It’s not exhaustive; but it’s a place to start.
Eastern Orthodox Liturgy
Orthodox Church History
Classics of Eastern Spirituality
Classics in Eastern Theology
Customs
Church writings
The Fathers of the Eastern Church
The great schools of Eastern spirituality
Eastern religious orders and religious congregations
2. Cease from these types of phrases which can easily lead to problems:
You said...
You need to...
You don't get it.
Why don't you...
If only you...
It is you who...
You are wrong.
I'm not the one who...
Some people here...
3. Cease from authoring thread titles that will elicit a negative response:
4. Use non-controversial words which have meanings everyone can agree on whenever possible.
Spend your time discussing the substance of the topic and not arguing tangents on words that instigate or inflame the other side.
Use bolds, underlines, font size increases, or other emphases very sparingly.
No hyperbole and no sarcasm in a debate.
Please remember that there are many people lurking who are judging your position and all those who are in your communion by your behavior alone. It does not matter what anyone else says; you should be a model of charitable dialogue. If someone else is not, please do not respond in kind. Let the moderator know and it will be handled as necessary.
Finally, these guideline apply to Orthodox AND Catholic posters.
I'm going to break with procedure and leave this thread open if any posters have any other suggestions.
Thanks
Eric
