What is wrong with the homepage and why are the side columns soooo large and the forums so small and difficult to read?

Because a title is too long. Someone put a link as the title, and it formats weird when that is done. Annoying? yes.

My 'latest threads' column is so big, it pushes the main threads box over to the right of the screen.

Yep. That results from users not following CAF directions

to use the title of the news article as the title of a news thread. (News stories do not have URL's as titles.) Someone apparently didn't know that or forgot that.

Making a website is something between writing a computer program and formatting a document (a very complicated document sometimes). In fact this is so hard to do properly that many designers, even professionals, use automated tools, which are imperfect, but then if you have to do all of it by hand and predict everything that can go wrong, it's very hard. You generally correct things as you go, only after some problems happen. Haaaard is the life of a webdesigner.

Making everything tight is an arduous task.

This said, the specific problem we're talking about seems to be a too long single word. A very frequent cause of formatting going weird on a webpage. This is because browsers won't normally break up a word. A URL will be regarded as a single word because there's no space in the middle. Then the element (e.g. a box) that contains such a long word will extend beyond its normal length in order to accommodate.

A solution could be to put:

word-wrap: break-word;

in the style of the appropriate element. This would make sure the browser breaks the word if needed. Had this problem once on my website.

And now the same thing is happening on the 'Stuff' thread, because people are "trying out" oversized graphics which also widen the page and make it impossible to read.
