Default Archbishop: Obama Needs To Stop 'Intruding Into Internal Life Of Church'...

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — There was a sharp rebuke Wednesday from Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan that put even more pressure on the president to calm a widening election year uproar. The issue at hand was the president’s insistence that Catholic institutions provide free birth control to their employees.

Man, I really need to get new glasses. I first thought the title of this post was "Archbishop Obama!"

I'd like to add that what Obama really needs to do is to retire!

from the article:
“The federal government should do what it’s traditionally done since July 4, 1776, namely back out of intruding into the internal life of a church,” Dolan told CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer."
The issue is not whether Catholics may or may not use contraception. Nobody in the Church is following them around to check up on them.

The issue is whether the government can force a Catholic institution, hospital, or charity, to violate its own religious beliefs.

Constitutionally, the answer is clear. It cannot.

That is why this mandate must be fought. If the government can force a Catholic institution to reject its own Catholicism, religious freedom is dead in this nation.

I like the sentiment.

However, how do we answer the opposition when they simplly say that the Church interferes in politics all of the time and now is just getting upset when the tables are turned?

We have the right to meddle in politics all we want. This country is a democracy and we have every bit as much right to self-determination as any other group or any other individuals.

HOwever there are constitutional freedoms that guarantee freedom of religion and freedom of speech.

Do you agree with the mandate, Catholic Medic?

Catholics are like every other citizen. We have the right to speak up (that is to say "interfere with politics") when we disagree with what's going on. The Environmentalists aren't questioned for their right to speak up. Why should we be? Are we not also citizens?

If you are truly a practicing Catholic, and work as a Catholic medic, why does it seem to me that you are siding with those who wish to force us to sell an intrinsic evil? Or are you just being the devil's advocate?

No, you can’t keep it: Franciscan University drops student coverage.

Bishops reject softened birth control rule
Quote:
U.S. Roman Catholic bishops are rejecting the Obama administration's plan to accommodate faith groups that object to the birth control mandate.

The bishops said in a statement Tuesday to Health and Human Services that the prospective new rules don't do enough to protect religious liberty.

The mandate requires employers to provide health insurance that includes birth control for workers. The plan sparked protests from faith leaders because it included most religious nonprofits such as hospitals and colleges.

President Barack Obama offered a compromise. He said insurers would bear the cost of the birth control instead of religious employers. However, the bishops argue that the compromise still makes their insurance plans a conduit for contraceptives.

The administration is reviewing public comments before making any final decision.

Newspaper Ads Expose Obama’s War on Religious Freedom
Quote:
Newspaper ads warning the public of the Obama Administration’s threats to religious freedom began running in Florida on Sunday, May 13th. The first newspaper ad was placed by the Religious Freedom Coalition in the Panama City News Herald. Religious Freedom Coalition Chairman William J. Murray said, “Our purpose is to pressure the Obama Administration to stop the war it is waging against religious liberty in America.” Among several issues, the ad cites the freedom of speech lost by military chaplains and the mandate on religious organizations to furnish birth control and sterilization procedures.Obama Administration to stop the war it is waging against religious liberty in America.” Among several issues, the ad cites the freedom of speech lost by military chaplains and the mandate on religious organizations to furnish birth control and sterilization procedures.

On May 16th additional ads will appear in the Washington County News in Chipley, FL and the Holmes County Times Advertiser in Bonifay, FL. The ad schedule will move south along the Florida Gulf Coast to areas around Tampa and Naples in the next few weeks. Murray said, “We will not advertise in big liberal newspapers, as our goal is not to anger liberals. Our goal is to encourage social conservatives to contact their congressmen and Senators and demand that Congress block President Barack Obama’s continued attacks on religious liberty with legislation such as that recently offered recently by Congressman Todd Akin to protect the rights of conscience for military chaplains.”

Franciscan U First Victim of Obama Mandate Forces
Quote:
Franciscan University appears to be the first casualty of the new Obama HHS mandate that requires Catholic colleges, groups and businesses to pay for drugs that may cause abortions and birth control for their employees.

Although President Barack Obama declared “If you like your health care coverage you can keep it,” when it came to passing Obamacare, a Catholic college in Ohio has determined it will no longer offer a student health insurance plan.

BINGO. THAT is exactly the point.

Not only that: If the Army can tell priests they can't read a statement by their own bishop in Mass, then the constitutional right of free speech is also dead. It that's not what it means, then it doesn't mean anything at all and never did.
