There's a free plugin available for vBulletin subscribers, named "StopForumSpam". It is a free service which takes the self-selected usernames, email addresses and IP addresses of people wanting to sign up, and searches its own database for reported spammers, and blocks registrations based on rules and settings established by the forum admin. It might be worth a look.
