Re: Wilma Could Turn CAT 5
Gilliam it is a 5, from the looks of it. Wow that was a quick increase!!!! Better start praying for our brethern down in Mexico, Hondourus, Belieze, Cuba, Florda and other such areas.
The good thing is it looks like it might start breaking up in time for Florida, and its projected to move pretty quick. By then there might be some eye wall replacement.

Re: Wilma Could Turn CAT 5
The Meteorologist On Board The Plane Relayed An
Extrapolated 881 Mb Pressure And Measured 884 Mb With A Dropsonde.
This Is All In Association With A Very Small Eye That Has Been
Oscillating Between 2 And 4 N Mi During Eye Penetrations. This Is
Probably The Lowest Minimum Pressure Ever Observed In The Atlantic
Basin And Is Followed By The 888 Mb Minimum Pressure Associated
With Hurricane Gilbert In 1988.

Re: Wilma Could Turn CAT 5
One more good thing, the hurrican force winds are not really in that big of a range, only like 15 miles. Its pretty compact.
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 15 MILES... 30 KM...
FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP
TO 160 MILES...260 KM.

Re: Wilma Could Turn CAT 5
Predicted to be a CAT 2 when it hits the east coast of Florida. It is three days out and from what I see on TV, the heavy rain squalls we are getting now in northern Palm Beach County are the far outer bands of Wilma.

Re: Wilma Could Turn CAT 5
8 am update
AT 8 AM EDT...1200Z...THE CENTER OF HURRICANE WILMA WAS LOCATED NEAR LATITUDE 17.2 NORTH...LONGITUDE 82.8 WEST OR ABOUT 340 MILES... 550 KM...SOUTHEAST OF COZUMEL MEXICO.
WILMA IS MOVING TOWARD THE WEST-NORTHWEST NEAR 8 MPH...13 KM/HR. A TURN TOWARD THE NORTHWEST IS EXPECTED DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.
MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS ARE NEAR 175 MPH...280 KM/HR...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. WILMA IS A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC CATEGORY FIVE HURRICANE ON THE SAFFIR-SIMPSON SCALE. FLUCTUATIONS IN INTENSITY ARE COMMON IN HURRICANES THIS INTENSE AND ARE LIKELY DURING THE NEXT 24 HOURS.
HURRICANE FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 15 MILES... 30 KM... FROM THE CENTER...AND TROPICAL STORM FORCE WINDS EXTEND OUTWARD UP TO 160 MILES...260 KM.
BASED ON DROPSONDE AND FLIGHT-LEVEL DATA FROM AN AIR FORCE PLANE JUST RETURNING FROM ITS MISSION IN WILMA...THE MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE IS ESTIMATED TO BE 882 MB...26.05 INCHES. THIS IS THE LOWEST PRESSURE ON RECORD FOR A HURRICANE IN THE ATLANTIC BASIN.

Re: Wilma Could Turn CAT 5
Well, it's now projected to hit my area of Florida right about when I'd be at 9AM Mass on Sunday morning.
I think I know where I will be...

That wretched storm track has it going right over my house on the east coast after it hits you. I'm so sick of this! We had no power for a month last year, and 3 of my chickens died. Oh well, lots of time for things to change. This time the chickens are coming inside the house.....no matter what DH says!

Re: Wilma Could Turn CAT 5
As of 5pm, Wilma has sustained winds of 160mph, with a pressure of 892mb, much better than the 882mb it was earlier.

Re: Wilma Could Turn CAT 5
The good thing is while it is intense, its pretty small and should to move quickly over Florida.

Actually, my understanding is that it is going to get bigger.
