Default Newly discovered small asteroid just misses Earth; next up is much bigger 12/12/12 asteroid

Discovered only two days ago, XE54 came about as close to crashing into Earth as an asteroid can without actually doing so - close enough to be “eclipsed by Earth’s shadow, causing its shadow to ‘wink out’ for a short time,” according to Universe Today.

With a diameter of just 72-160 feet, XE54 is a far cry from the over six-mile wide asteroid that wiped out dinosaurs. But, while it’s possible an asteroid of this size would produce nothing more than a brilliant fireball as it disintegrated after entering the atmosphere, a direct hit by remaining rock chunks on a populated region could be disastrous.

Small asteroids such as these are difficult to discover, usually detected within a week of their closest encounter, and that’s much too little time to do anything but issue a warning about the likely locations of impact.

So, what about it? Dont get this dooms day doom and gloom ****.. the title page has this doomday superstition asking people to buy a dumb book and the predictiiong of the end of the world. amazing for a site that should be agaisnt superstition of such, this is a
Catholic site, or supose to be.

The story of three holy men, priests, are playing a game of pool when the subject of what if the world came to an end what would you do? First says he will go to confession, and mend ends with those around. Second says he would pray for all to be spared. they notice the third doesnt comment, or add to the discussion. So when asked, he says, he started to play the game of pool to the Glory of God, and to that he will finish the game to the Glory of God.
People, if your living your lives to the Glory of God and your every actions, why the concern. Great calamities and destruction are noted in the Bible, Noa Ark was because God tired of the People rejecting him, as Sodamon and Gamora.
Today the US wages unjustified wars of the rich on the worlds poor, a terrrible war based on bigotry against one sect, to pilfer their oil.
A corrupt government with leaders that call for the mutilation and murder of children is condoned by many, that continues a fictional economy and a government of socialism that strips away the peoples freedom.
wake up to the horrors of a complacentcey that brings civilizations to ruin, as the people look on to evil and fail to stand against such.

What if God brings a caclamity to the world, will you Praise God for showing his power and call of the People back to him in recognition, or will you curse God is the real quesiton..
the people of Haiti which is a predominate civilization saw great calamity, and no end of the aid to the people of Haiti would or should have been the result, yet very little was done to aid them in their plight. For the people in the US have came in their greed and gluttony to have erased their charity and obligation to the poor. The price, of unjust wars they condon.

Whoa, there!

There was nothing "doom and gloom" or "superstition" at all about this article. It is current news and highly educational. I am sorry that you read into this article that which was not there.

I find it highly educational and newsworthy that the XE54 asteroid that passed between the Earth and the Moon yesterday, was only discovered two days prior to the near miss. I did not realize that our early warning system on near miss asteroids (even small ones) was so deficient.

It's not really deficient, it's just calibrated to detect asteroids that pose a real threat. There are far too many asteroids coming around the Earth every day to worry about all of them, so they focus on the ones that could do some real damage.

True, this one could cause damage on a local scale, but nothing on a global scale, so it wasn't the size of asteroid they're typically looking for

Further, the ad is not promoting a superstitious belief in the end of the world, rather prompting the reader to understand what Jesus said about the end of the world, which, I believe, was that no one knows the hour except the father.

In so doing he quells the sensationalism of those who see an Antichrist or a “Rapture” lurking behind every gloomy headline and dispels the misconception that Jesus predicted the end of the world within his own generation.

Using incisive scriptural scholarship and some long-neglected wisdom from Church Fathers, Currie explains the meaning of Christ’s end-times prophecies as his first-century audience would have understood them.

The result is a fascinating story of promise and fulfillment that reaffirms our faith in Christ’s infallible wisdom. It also fills us with optimism for the future rather than a crippling fear of doomsday.
no doom and gloom

On another celestial note: I just read that there will be very nice meteor showers beginning Thursday evening....as many as 100 per hour and it looks like it will be clear in my area.
