I think they would be feeling sadness and maybe even dispair. But they were also probably feeling some hope that maybe somehow God would make things work out. Sort of like Aberham when he was ready to sacrifice Isaac. He still believed God could bring about his promise to make a great nation of Aberham through Isaac.
