Re: Karl Keating's E-Letter of October 24, 2006
Karl,
Interesting topic. Interesting history. My husband's elderly aunt (95) still lives on the family farm, and still is in touch with Sinn Fein. My mother in law remembered the Black Shirts coming into small Irish towns and gunning down whole towns - in the name of anti Catholicism. When we were visiting, Cromwell seemed to have destroyed much of what would have been a monument to history so great and so beautiful and so Catholic little could have been compared to it. When we were in C of E churches, they seemed beautiful but empty. A Catholic who knows longs for something that is simply not there. Yet in the decidedly crushed church on the outskirts of some town was a little ruin with three wine sinks made of stone right by this huge altar. I touched them wondering what it must be like for Cromwell to come smashing and burning. It was all very emotional.
I was Dutch for 54 years, and then with the arrival of some adoption papers, I found out I'm Irish. Lately I've been listening to a song called The Fields of Athenry - it would make anyone temporarily Irish. If you have trouble siding with the Irish, just listen.
There has always been someone in the cesspool - someone everyone loves to hate. Right now it's the unborn. I can see Catholics being the next target - again. But this time, I"m sure we will encourage it; we'll let it happen in the name of some spurious and trite murmur of sophistication.
Anyway, nice thoughtful material.

Re: Karl Keating's E-Letter of October 24, 2006
 Dear Karl,
Thank you for the Church in History information. My grandfather and father were both Masons. They come from a Scotch-Irish background out of Pennsylvania and Indiana. Before that my best information is that they came from County Cork Ireland. Although I don't remember them talking against Catholics I have often thought that the Masons have have a deep hate for the Catholic Church. I was raised Methodist and converted to Catholicism in 1983. Can anyone tell me if the Masons are Anti-Catholic?
Peace and All Good Things!!

Re: Karl Keating's E-Letter of October 24, 2006
the Catholic family of my dad's mother emigrated from Yorkshire in the 1840s in a period of backlash against Catholics (and economic woes). This family had remained Catholic for over 400 years, not waffled back and forth as many did. Formerly upper class but lost their lands and property due to religious persecution, sank to yeomanry until the left, the whole family, aunts, uncles cousins, at least 40 people, left first to New YOrk then Pittsburgh PA.

Re: Karl Keating's E-Letter of October 24, 2006
This year I took a trip to Great Britain. I was interested in what it would have been like to live there during the reformation. I was surprized to see Catholic things in the big Cathedrals until I learned about the late 1800s'. During the tours there was particular delight from the tour guides if they had some old Catholic artifact to display. The decision to declare English Gothic arcitecture unique to great Britain was proof of Gods humor.
Eamon Duffys' Stripping of the Altars gives one a window into the past. There are a lot of parallels to today.
All Anti Catholicism is for our sanctification as it releases beatitudes.

Re: Karl Keating's E-Letter of October 24, 2006
Perhaps from an armchair in Canada anti Catholicism is a release for the beatitudes, but watching your child die of green mouth or your grandchild die because some idiot decided it would be cute to see his head blown off, or having your husband shipped to Australia because he took a little corn out of the man's barn who planned to export food from a starving nation seems just a little bit comfortable - like watching a savage movie and then turning off the set.
As one who has been personally persecuted for being a Catholic by a Catholic bishop, I'll just say that the passions are well seasoned and keeping them from invading the vices has been a real trial.

Hello Carl,
I have made the same discovery. It's amazing how many cottage industries are out there working in the Lord's vineyard.
Pertaining to your topic of history, here is another one: www.rchistory.com
For myself, I have my own, a for-profit corporation: Resurrection NOW, Inc. My business is to gather, synthesize and present to the public the credible evidence and testimony that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ - actually happened.
Here is another "cottage industry" pertaining to marriage:

I down-loaded and read Barton's monograph. What academic credentials does he have? Or is he an autodidact? IAC, he leads us through an astonishing array of secondary sources, and I have yet to read a clearer presentation--or more persuasive deflation---of modern biblical scholarship.

I just clicked on the link in my E-Letter and got through. Dennis told me he has had a little problem with his site. Try it again.
