Writing prayer petitions

My husband needs to write prayer petitions for church. Does anyone know of a free site or a resource that could help him?

He should consult with the priest befoere the next mass as these are usually complimentary to the readings and gospels of the day.

You could also grab last week's petitions and use that basic form and format but change them to fit the mass of that day.

The priest doesn't write them and hasn't written them in years. This is my husbands first weekend at this church and it is his job to write them. He is the music minister/liturgist.

Does he have access to a Sacramentary and/or GIRM? They would be as goo a place to start as any.

I believe (someone please correct if I'm wrong) that the first petition usually is for the Pope and local Bishop. Others are to address local needs, Poor Souls, etc., and others can tie in to the readings at the Mass.

Yes, the first one is always for the pope and bishop. The Sacramentary is a good place to look. I'll tell him.

Since he is a music minister he is used to going to different music sites each week that give him suggestions for songs. So he is probably thinking along the same lines as that for petitions. Sites that give suggestions for the week.

The General Instruction on the Roman Missal (GIRM) gives the following guideline:

"70. As a rule, the series of intentions is to be

1. For the needs of the Church;
   
2. For public authorities and the salvation of the whole world;
   
3. For those burdened by any kind of difficulty;
   
4. For the local community."

The Priests for Life website has general intercessions for every Sunday of the year at the following link:

These usually fit within the GIRM guidelines, frequently refer to the Scripture readings for Mass, and include one pro-life intercession.

if your parish subscribes to one of the popular missalettes they usually have a booklet or on-line resource with suggested petitions for Sundays and feasts, often in both English and Spanish. you have already paid for this service with the missalette subscription in most cases.

I searched "Prayer of the Faithful" on google.com and found

A book on preparing them is "Preparing the General Intercessions" by Michael Kwatera (Liturgical Press, 1996, ISBN 081462362X).

The Roman Missal includes "Sample Formulas for the General Intercessions". There are 11 of these, including "9. Ordinary Time I" (Roman Missal, Catholic Book Publishing Co., New York, 1985, page 1002).
